Hiya Danny & all other flamers. Very heavy headed on this day. Long session mourning the monumental losses of Mark E Smith & Hugh Masekela last night. They will both be missed in my orbit. I'll be sitting quietly up the back.

Cheers Danny, had this drunken vision not so many hours ago of Joe Frank & MES arguing over the cab fare at the pearly gates, much to my buddies amusement. Those two would indulge in great conversation I'm sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm

That's an amazing vision, zonk. My drunken visions (back when I really drank) mostly involved a lot of bad ideas

A 1990 Chicago Tribune article refers to Byrd as "the Satchmo of the steel guitar."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm

it's so obvious the influence for the Hal Davis track... beyond "just influence"; but it's still worth it! very good.

great ordells track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm

Do you know anything about the Ordells, Jason? I'm coming up empty-handed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm

...and i was looking to see what album that o'jays track might've appeared on, and i confess i had no idea they had 29 studio albums. i have 4 and i thought i had a respectable representation haha!

JtotheK:

i know the flip of sippin' is a groovy instrumental track...
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
JtotheK:

. . . and my (admittedly brief) internet research just now finds that Give The Drummer's own Funky 16 Corners has a blog entry for "sippin' a cup of coffee".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Little Danny:

@coel: oh man they recorded so much. Talk about knowing about 5% of a discography
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
coelacanth∅:

i liked the ordells song too. never heard of them before.
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
JtotheK:

From F16C blog: "The Ordells 45 was released in 1967 and as far as I can tell they never recorded another note. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to discover that they had nothing at all to do with the instrumental, which leaves us with one, absolutely incredible performance, committed to vinyl and then largely forgotten.

I have seen several references that indicate that ‘Sippin’ a Cup of Coffee’ has similarly affected many others, and that it may have something of a lowrider following, but aside from that, it remains the property of soul collectors."

Thanks for the research Jason!

I'm finding references in, e.g., Billboard, to Richard Rome, the arranger. In 1968 he formed Allert Prods. with Al Martino's personal manager.

it always makes me sad. somebody lied; record company had no faith; no capital; somebody didn't come through; had to get on with life....who knows what might've been.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
Little Danny:

@dean: Yeah Rome was a pretty steady Philly-area arranger/composer type. I think he was Philly area
  11:41pm
Dean:

Curiously, also in '68, he set up a prod'n co., Producers, Inc., with a fellow named Brooks Odell...

this axelrod album is one that i don't tire of.
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
JtotheK:

@dean - brooks odell sounded familiar ... and it's because i have a 45 of his, 'watch your step' on gold records.
  11:43pm
Dean:

Yes, evidently Odell was quite prolific. Coincidence, I assume. Rome must have been Philly area.
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
JtotheK:

@dean -- off topic, but i did enjoy the nixon book you suggested. i chuckled picturing him on a profane tirade while listening to 'victory at sea'.
  11:47pm
Dean:

Good to hear, @JtotheK! Lotsa chuckle (or weep) moments in that one.
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
JtotheK:

yeah, i was hoping the author would have made up a story about Nixon putting Quaker Oats on his enemy list because they refused to admit he was the model for the 'Quaker Oats' guy on the container.
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
JtotheK:

back to the Ordells ... scrolling down on the F16C blog finds this comment: "The song was co-written by Lee Andrews and sang by The Ordells. The lead was superbly delivered by the late Henry (need Ronald) Eleby, backed by Moses (nee Thomas) Eleby, Thomas Matthews, Archie and Clifford (last names not known). As you correctly stated, they didn’t record
another song, although they were at least as good as the more well known Philadelphia groups and more polished than most. Sadly, through bad management, it all fell apart not long after the release of the song. Ronald was briefly recruited by Motown to replace the late great Eddie Kendricks before they finally went with Damon Harris (again management). I am proud to say that I am the youngest brother of Ronnie and Tommy Eleby."
