So, gang, tell me what were your favorite reissues or historical comps this year?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm

OMG, Hyde! I was thinking about going up there in two weeks
Avatar 7:11pm

i love the Midori Takada/Through The Looking Glass rerelease

Dean:

The Brain Box is a favorite. I bought a bunch of boxes this year, but most were originally reissued in past years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Gary:

I need to hear that one, Hyde ... and, wait, whoa, Brain Box came out this year? I totally forgot about it
Avatar 7:14pm

The Beach Boys "1967 – Sunshine Tomorrow" is pretty great. The new first-ever stereo mix of the "Wild Honey" album is phenomenal!
Avatar 7:14pm

@Gary huh, do you have any intel? i am mostly going to eat at Heng Lay and Peepkuptmei. And a couple other non Cambodian stops. If there's any place you want me to scope out, lemme know.

@Gary oh and also:if you really go there in 2 weeks my new job doesn't start until Jan 2. i got wheels.

Awesome! Yeah, maybe we should -- I'm not entirely sure exactly the neighborhoods we'll want to hit, but let's get in touch ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm

Meanwhile, it appears I've got a technical issue I need to work out
Avatar 7:24pm
hyde:

@Gary just drop me a line a couple days ahead if you're really doing Lowell!

@Tim hmm, i think i need that Wild Honey in stereo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Gary:

Yeah, I wanna hear Wild Honey, as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm
Gary:

The technical issue, btw, is NOT the way this track sounds -- it's a deconstruction of Tom Jobim
  7:42pm

Another nice compilation with some reissued material is Fairport Convention's Come All Ye.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Gary:

Would love to hear that one, Dean

@Dean wow, thanks. i love Fairport but didn't even know about this.

It gets a lot of play at WFMU, and deservedly so.

I don't know if the Mahmoud Guinia release that Marc Teare did on Hive Mind Records qualifies as a "reissue". It's really good, at any rate.

There's a new 3-disc Isaac Hayes compilation out called "The Spirit of Memphis (1962-1976)". Encompasses not only his solo work, but also his earlier composition and production work at Stax. Haven't heard the whole thing yet, but any comp that has both "Soul Man" and "Shaft" on it can't be bad!
  8:12pm
Dean:

I'm gunnin' for that Isaac Hayes set, @tim.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
Gary:

And speaking of boxes, The Fall singles collection, though I gather it doesn't include them all (based on some rather miffed Amazon reviews)
  8:17pm

German prog band Novalis released a 15CD set this year. I don't have the budget or stamina to go for it.

Chicago was important at certain dances in grade and high school
  8:41pm

Yeah, me, too. Saw a good story yesterday or the day before about Terry Kath, whose daughter produced a documentary about him. Those first couple, three albums, even including the monumental 4LP live set, were generally solid.

I have jsut recently rediscoverd some joy in non Syd Barrett (which I never stopped listening to) Pink Floyd. Still have a hard time with Dark Side but I listend to The Wall all the way through for the first time in over 20 years on an overnight drive and was like oh yeah I really loved this album at one time

From the haters:
"Enough people were taken in by (lead singer Ian Anderson`s) awkward collage of fifteenth-hand theology, light-metal theatrics, and ill-informed rural nostalgia to make `Aqualung` an enormous hit among pretentious 13-year-olds of all ages."
I was maybe a few weeks past 13 when I bought Aqualung and Thick As A Brick at the same time.

Pretentious? I don't think I was pretentious at 13 may be a bit self obsessed but I mean have you ever met me? Why wouldn't I be?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
Gary:

When I was studying music there was this one kid with super long hair who looooooooved Pink Floyd, and I guess loaned our theory teacher one of the albums, not sure which one. I still remember their convo when the teacher returned it:

Teacher: I think ... I think you need to be on some kind of drugs to get anything out of this.

Student: Well, yeah

I was probably around 13 when I bought Thick as a Brick -- I loved it because the newspaper reminded me of National Lampoon or Monty Python books, for some reason
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
cklequ:

I think I loved that record for the same reason, Gary. I've been a sucker for unique packaging since then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm

I discovered TAAB around 12 or 13 as well in my uncles record collection. I had no idea who the guy Jethro Tull was and it was the fold out newspaper that caught my attention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm
Gary:

Me too, definitely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm trying to think of any other band or artist I've done a bigger 180 on. I can't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm
joe:

So many albums were swiped from that collectoin based on cover art. I remember having seen In The COurt of The Crimson king in his room when I was like 5 or 6 and that cover stuck with me forever that when I came across it during one of those raids it was definate take.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
coelacanth∅:

stillb/p @9.05 -people who throw the word "pretentious" around when they're talking about music that's beyond their comprehension (there are a few wfmu djs who fall into this category) are usually pretentious people who give themselves far too much credit for their scant knowledge of music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm

That's a tough one bacause over the last few years I have gone back to so many bands that I could listen to any more for so many years.

i took several years off listening to jethro tull...except aqualung, which i've listened to as an easter tradition in it's entirety, almost every year for many decades. it is a perfect album.

NOt to exhale smoke up Uncle Michaels posterior or play to his being in the room but I have very much adopted his show moniker of No Guilty Pleasures in my listening which has allowed me to go back and re-embrace much music that I thought I was too cool for school for anymore.

@joe, Yes, I like Monster, and I have all of REM's albums through '99, I just don't like every song.

@coel: Dinosaur through Greenmind, then it's song for song basis for me.

Sorry, I'm clearly (a) high on cold medicine and (b) stupid and (c) can't distinguish 60s "youth culture" musicals

I get a hankerin' to hear "Murmur" once in a while. I like many of the other albums, but don't often feel like putting them on.

One of the other things I have embraced more in the last few years is the not feeling pressured to judge based on a complete album. I'm way more comfortable with the out of those 13 tracks you produced 2 good songs and I'm ok with that as opposed to an all or nothing mindset.

Wasn't the Grass Roots one of those situations that kind of became a solo project for someone that wasn't even the initial song writer for the band.

Holy Crap - I never heard that Fadoul track before - it's a cover of frickin' Creedence Clearwater Revival's version of "Good Golly Miss Molly"!!

Gary - I just started listening to your show in the last couple of days and it is blowing my mind. Really incredible music, ecclectic and beautiful. I'm a Brooklyn resident and will never look at Bodegas the same way again. Thank you, sir!
