I remember when I was a kid my grandparents had a Charles Schulz Peanuts book called Happiness Is A Sad Song, and I was like "that doesn't make sense", but now it does.

You are impatient Jeff! I'm in the middle of writing a question...Is the version of "A Heart Needs a Home" that's on Hokey Pokey the first version of that song?

@saucerful: I believe so

Hi Jeff--lurking but loving it as always. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving and are doing well tonight.

Just gearing up for a cold, cold, cold winter
  1:15am
zenkoan:

Thought I detected a bit of a blue note in your voice before...perhaps you are speaking metaphorically about the cold x 3 winter approaching
  1:16am
zenkoan:

Oh--I get it now
  1:20am
saucerful:

The winter chill is perfect for hybernating, drinking tea, reading, listening to music, cooking at home, etc. (whether you're coupled up or not).
  1:22am
DARCEY LEONARD:

It's warm in LA.
Avatar 1:23am
Jeff Conklin:

I'm talking about the real cold and the existential one.
Avatar 1:23am
Jeff Conklin:

If/when WFMU opens up shop in LA, I'll gladly move. This is all that keeps me in new york
  1:25am
Agent Peter:

or new jersey, presumably...
  1:30am
zenkoan:

Have you spent much time in LA, Jeff? I have ( as well as in NYC) and, though the LA weather in winter may beat NY's, a soulful, introspective fellow like yourself might find LA pretty lacking in that department (apologies to above poster in LA, but still)
Avatar 1:31am
AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I predict...warm East Coast winter.
Avatar 1:32am
Jeff Conklin:

I've spent maybe a month total in Los Angeles. It's appeal to me is the closeness of the ocean and the mountains. As a "city", well, it seems to have what one requires of such a construct.
  1:35am
zenkoan:

Would be a great spot without all the superficial/habitually insincere people and absurd traffic.
  1:36am
kyle landstra:

wow never heard this track by the dead before. love it.
Avatar 1:36am
Jeff Conklin:

I still have a little daydreaming left in me but the reality is ill most likely die cold and miserable in NYC
  1:36am
saucerful:

Zenkoan, don't believe the bad hype about LA.
  1:37am
kyle landstra:

ahh cover. makes sense.
Avatar 1:37am
Jeff Conklin:

@kyle: Not played after 1969, and not much when it was in rotation.
  1:38am
zenkoan:

I know it's not applicable to everyone there, saucerful, but in my experience there's more than a grain of truth underlying the stereotype, unfortunately
  1:38am
rw:

Hello! Not everybody in Los Angeles is superficial and insincere, but the traffic IS absurd and I think that does keep people from connecting because it's so difficult to get around.
  1:39am
DARCEY LEONARD:

Agreed. LA ain't so bad and when it is you sit in the sunshine and don't care. I lived here before and it's a great time here right now. Why do you think al those Cali jams are so laid back?
  1:39am
zenkoan:

Besides, I'm willing to bet that Mr. Conklin fully realizes that contentment, or its absence, is far more a function of state of mind than state of residence.
  1:40am
saucerful:

Amen
Avatar 1:41am
Jeff Conklin:

Yes. I've been discontent long enough where I am, might as well see what discontent is somewhere else.
  1:41am
zenkoan:

China Rider on the way? Or just China? Love it either way!!
  1:42am
rw:

Jeff, if you're ever in LA I'll buy you a taco.
  1:44am
zenkoan:

I hope a small bit of the discontent is ameliorated by the knowledge that your carefully curated shows generate contentment for many every single week.
  1:46am
saucerful:

Yeah, feeling contented right now. That was a smoking hot guitar lead on China Cat. I'm imagining I'm at the Fillmore West in '69.
  1:47am
saucerful:

Think how high everyone in California is going to be after Jan 1st. LOL

Marijuana becomes legalized in California Jan. 1st for those not aware.
Avatar 1:51am
Jeff Conklin:

That's not a selling point for me
  1:51am
saucerful:

hahahah
  1:52am
rw:

Saucerful, my daughter's in Boulder where marijuana is legal. She sent a text yesterday that said, "Lots of parents who are in town for the holidays are getting their Colorado weed on. It's an interesting scene." Accompanied by a photo she stole of a stoned looking soccer-type mom holding a frappuccino.
  1:52am
saucerful:

That's hilarious!
  1:54am
saucerful:

Jeff, just goes to show being a head is also a state of mind...

It is interesting how sad songs are cool to listen to even if you aren't sad....
  2:07am
zenkoan:

And if you are sad (and isn't every adult, on some level, a mixture of sad and other states, having lived life for some time?), those songs are very cathartic and ultimately healing
Avatar 2:12am
Jeff Conklin:

Yeah i mean sad songs always sounded good to me. they just sound GREAT lately.
Avatar 2:12am

I'm a very nocturnal person myself (obviously, since I listen to this show every week!), but I try to adjust my schedule a little when the days get shorter so I can get more sunlight, which supports my mood. Also use one of those 10,000 lux lamps in my house to compensate for less sun exposure.
