Bagels and bacon, my upbringing won't allow it (and I LOVE bacon, but I can hear the Rabbis turn over with that combo) .

No Dizzy, @doc. (You didn't get your fill yesterday on WKCR?) I've never really warmed to much of his stuff, tbh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am
Jeff Golick:

My feelings exactly, @UM. Go, Astros.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:13am
doctorjazz:

Really Jeff? Interesting... When I started exploring bebop, Dizzy was my entry point, found him easier to "get" than Bird at first. Saw him live many times (later on, of course), was always great to see him. Still think he was great (even though, or maybe because, he also thought about the entertainment aspect of performance)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am
Uncle Michael:

Yes, go Altuvestros!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am
Jeff Golick:

Veering into Tony Coulter territory here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am
Jeff Golick:

@doc: I think my very first encounters with Dizzy on records were poor choices (by me) and that sort of set the stage...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am
Uncle Michael:

Is anyone else as excited about the possibility of Lewis Hamilton clinching a 4th world championship this afternoon as I am?

No?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am
Jeff Golick:

Uh...no. But: did he kneel?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:28am
doctorjazz:

One can make the case that, while there were certainly adventurous composers and musicians before bebop, the drive (in jazz; classical was much earlier) to search for "out" sounds starts seriously with Bird, Diz, Monk, Bud, etc (which also coincides with jazz's decline as pop music).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am
Uncle Michael:

We don't know yet. It hasn't transpired.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am
Uncle Michael:

Coleman Hawkins sought a bit of adventure. Arguably so did Pops and Sidney Bechet before Hawkins did.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:31am
Brian in UK:

@Uncle, have you seen the MotoGP from Phillip Island in Australia today. Man, that is some racing. F1 is OK but where is the racing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:32am
Brian in UK:

Is it true that Coleman Hawkins gave the saxophone a credible place in the musical world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am
coelacanth∅:

i've never disliked Diz' music but i've never been compelled to listen to it either. once in a while's good.
be bop in general doesn't always excite me. (and i don't consider Monk be bop, though i've seen him in that category, strangely, i think.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am
Jeff Golick:

I'm gonna say yes to that, @Brian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am
Uncle Michael:

Today the racing will be Lewis and Seb going into the first turn. There's great racing in the mid-pack all of the time. The grid is basically three tiers and there's racing within those tiers but not between them. I don't recall a time when 2-3 teams didn't dominate. As long as it's not *one*, I'm fine with it. That happens sometimes and it's boring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am
Uncle Michael:

Coleman Hawkins went to Topeka High School.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:38am
doctorjazz:

Absolutely, UM, and Duke and others...but the idea that finding a "new thing" was a big part of the reason d'etre of the music starts, to some extent, with beboppers. (of course, lots of beboppers then idolized Bird and institionalized lots of the innovations, leading to another "revolt" in the 50s. And this stuff is never really all that linear, but it's a useful framework for me...).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:41am

Gotta go, been fun!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am

honda certainly can make a shitty motor though, sometimes. (don't buy a honda lawn mower, i.e.)
