Monk and Coltrane were the first jazz musicians into whose works I consciously delved, after seeing Ken Burns' jazz documentary as a teenager. There's a lot of misses and flaws in the series, but it surely started a lot of people into jazz.

glenn an English tenor player who ran a jazz club in Soho with I think Pete King from the Sixties until his demise a few years ago. The club was getting a bit sad. In the last few years it has been revived. His club had some of the greats appearing. I remember seeing Bill Evans there in the late 70s.
Bizarrely he also ran a car racing team if my memory serves.
