Con: Women behind counters neither flirt with me nor are reticent.

That is to say, I'm now considered 'safe'. If I weren't white (enough), I'd probably welcome it.

Hi Melinda! We actually decided to focus on the ladies this episode, since there is a pretty significant impact on the "invisibility cloak" that occurs with woman as they age, but we do want to hear from men on the message board on this subject from their perspective.

Murakami I think you are right. Age still brings wisdom you can't attain without it, but elders aren't the sole repositories of knowledge and things change much more quickly now.

I 'read' much younger on the phone and via email; I've had potential high tech employers be very enthusiastic over those channels only to see their faces fall when I show up, in one case after travelling from one coast to another.

I found that at some point in my mid-late 30s I stopped worrying about attracting unwanted attention, whether or not dressing a certain way would attract it, etc. At first I thought it was just me gaining confidence through age but then I realized it was because guys weren't noticing me, or letting me know they noticed me. It is mostly liberating, but also kind of sad (and it feels whiny to mention the sad part, but there it is).

I remember hearing an interview with Joan Rivers(i think it was with Terry Gross) and they were saying how insulting it was when someone said to an older woman things like "oh, and who's this young lady?" or things like that. Most people don't even think that older people can handle it.
