A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Sylvia -“hate, hate, hate the boys who can dispel sexual hunger freely, without misgiving, and be whole, while I drag out from date to date in soggy desire, always unfulfilled” (August 1950). A few days later, she writes, and Plath fans know this quote intimately: “If only I can find him . . . the man who will be intelligent, yet physically magnetic and personable. If I can offer that combination, why shouldn’t I expect it in a man?”

Diana Dors, a fine vocalist and all-around sweet woman. Touted as the "British Marylin Monroe", which she NEVER believed in and which didn't really work out. I think the arguement is silly .. if you don't like new music - you're not looking in the right places. old/new... it's all good as long as it connects with you. I dislike older people who say corny things like "music these days... not like the old stuff!!" .. I feel like they gave up on music years ago and don't want to admit it to themselves.

@steveo: agreed. one of my favorite things to do in my sets is play something old and then something new that goes well with the old thing, esp. new singers whose voices resemble old ones. sometimes you get the oddest pairs of old and new vocal twins (like robbie basho and anohni, or gene pitney and kyle craft)

i don't like it when older people say that all new music nowadays sucks, but i also don't like it when people my age dismiss everything old (music, people, etc.) as lame or whatever. it seems like the youths, after being into vintage shit for a while, have come back around to hating everything old which is in itself a ripoff of the 60s (lol) but also annoying as a youth(ish) who loves old things, and old people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am
Greg from ZONE 5:

I like to keep up fer sure, but the frustrating thing with new music is that there's more being made than ever, and we're able to access ALL of it. Old music is always being unearthed, but nobody is making any new old music.

I stopped into a record (vinyl) store now in its third year in Nyack and bought--actually found!--a goodly array of $2 cassette tapes for my 94 wood-trim-dashboard Toyota Corolla's long-disused tapedeck. The tapes I bought were not music I listened to back then and perhaps thinking the rosey-hue and that sort of thing might have softened my crap-tolerance levels a smidge, this was not the case so all 8 tapes were thrown into the recycling bin at once :-( Moral of the story!!

greg from zone 5: i just had this faux argument with mypop music minded love interest, who was shocked to discover that all the music ive been playing around her (cosmetics, boy harsher, glass candy, tropic of cancer etc etc) was actually all extrenely recent, she felt as though its still actually 80s music, regardless of when it was recorded. after arguing for a minute, and realizing she meant 80s music as a genre, in leiu of "synth pop" or some, :gulp: "(insert)wave" rather than a period, i kind of accepted her point. it absolutely is influenced by the music n sound of that era, to such a point that its dramatically remniscent and reflective of that era, and no other, is it not in fact, new-old music?

Popping in during a self-imposed hiatus to share some positive old versus new thing.

I volunteered a the mini-record fair this weekend at Monty Hall; Trouble I might have helped you with your purchases but timing and circumstances didn’t seem right to say, “Hey! I am this guy…”

Anyway there was a kid—like 12 to 14 year old boy—who was upset he could not find any David Bowie records. I said, “Well, you gotta dig through the bins. They are frankly all mixed up so you might find a Bowie album if you look…”

His response, “I can’t use an album… I need a record…”

Mine, “Oh… Records and albums are the same thing… Maybe check the CDs as well?”

His response, “Oh… Good… But I can’t play CDs…”

So there is hope! And I hope the kid found a Bowie album or if anyone knows whose kid that was could hook him up with one.
