Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from September 29, 2017 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

You should be hearing trucker radio.
Avatar 7:53am

what i'm actaully hearing is some truckin' stuff...ok, yeah.. i hear it now. just tuned in! thanks.
Avatar 8:00am
annie:

many years ago, as i was tootlin' around town in upstate NY, my radio tuner switched to an omaha station and stayed there for about half an hour. it was so surreal. the explanation for that was atmospheric confusion due to hurricanes passing around the country..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03am

Hey all, what time do the festivities actually start?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04am

Today, I began the audio treat at 7:26 AM, ET.

hey doc! this is the inner sanctum of radio...the pre-show show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07am

I'm up at 6:00, normally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09am

OK, generally get to work at about 8, have to go straight to the stream; this is really cool, old timey stuff now...

(been going to Wake and Bake, which is fun too...1st world problems!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am

I first heard Dave Nemo on October 22, 1988...driving from Dallas to Houston at night...between two Grateful Dead concerts.
Avatar 8:14am

i don't do wakenbake..i've opted for wwoz. UM, are they still broadcasting this show?

Haven't listened to WWOZ, any particular shows/times you like, @Annie?

Avatar 8:19am
annie:

i really love the personal touch to this announcer's style. well doc, i mostly listen in the mornings, each deejay has a style, if you like brazilian, then saturdays are good starting around 1:00, going for about 5 hours. the station spends a lot of time highlighting their festivals, so you get lots of live broadcasts especially during festival times.
  8:21am
dan:

Commercial radio sucks today. It's more business than personality.
Avatar 8:21am
annie:

my fave OZ deejay is Mark landesman on sunday ams starting at 6, going to 9, CDT. he plays nice jazz and some good blues. i sent him some music of a nola jazzman i knew in NY, Al Gallodoro. ... so i'm partial.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22am

Ahh, got to Jazz Fest twice in NO, loved it, now about 15 years ago (was scheduled to go again 4 years ago for my birthday, but my mother passed away right at the time and had to cancel...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22am
Uncle Michael:

The Road Gang is on satellite these days, but without Dave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24am

It's a really nice mix of country/bluegrass/gospel.
Avatar 8:24am

you'll get back, doc. festival is crazy time. i've thought of going, but not sure i could keep up with the 24-7 jollity..yeah, that makes sense UM, truckers can use the serius radio...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27am

JazzFest is pretty crazy, but you don't have to get to everything that is going on, pacing is key (especially if it's 95 degrees...). Shows all day, clubs every night, could easily wear yourself out.
  8:28am
dan:

Where is JazzFest?
Avatar 8:28am
annie:

man, did walter brennan have a great long run.. yeah doc, i wear out just listening to the livewire. it's in new orleans dan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29am
Uncle Michael:

Dan, it's in New Orleans. I went once in the early '90s.
Avatar 8:29am
annie:

and, to be honest, i just wouldn't have fun in nola, the oppressive heat is not for me, so i get my vicarious thrills via radio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34am
doctorjazz:

Heat is pretty bad in NO; JazzFest is usually the last week of April and the 1st of May. It's already quite hot, but not as bad as it gets later I'd guess. Of the 2 festivals I got to, the second one had light rain most of the day, which made it MUCH more comfortable (highlights: Stevie Ray Vaughan set, and Neville Brothers with Herbie Hancock sitting in, man...)

@glenn I think there is something to be said in how you phrased that. It was still a time when "hits" could be regional. Although this was an all over hit there still could have been those areas where it took over the local supermarket

it's a good question, Uncle Michael. i think Ted Albert was just as astute a talent spotter, but marketing-wise he made mistakes; some think The Easybeats should have been as big as The Beatles and The Stones, but Ted got them wrong - but then AC/DC learnt with Ted from the mistakes made earlier. anyway, Clinton Walker reckons three Oz bands changed the whole of popular music in the 70s, The Bee Gees, The Saints and AC/DC. and none were from Sydney or Melbourne.

If you keep looking, though, I think it's a more complicated and blurry business of contrasting tales for the band name. (And 10cc is a ways off, I believe, from the real average.)

Visiting with a couple friends last week, two of us were eagerly talking about 10cc and the less revisited tracks. The woman with us, nearly entirely unfamiliar with the music, listened to two examples, but when I suggested a third, she raised her hands and said 'No," as if even one more would be distinctly uncomfortable. So we didn't get to "Hotel."
