We live in Downtown JC now - and moved to the current place around 2005. Soon after we moved there, my spouse saw a contractor dropping his lunch trash in the street. She pointed out that there was a trash can on the corner, and he should damn well use it.

He said, "When I was a kid, this neighborhood is where we came to burn cars!"

My mother went to nursing school at Jersey City Medical Center. She told me that as part of everybody's training, they each had to work a Saturday night in the emergency room so they could deal with gunshots and stabbings.
Million dollar condos or not, I wouldn't venture out onto Baldwin Ave. after dark.

There was big vacant lot in my previous JC neighborhood - just a few blocks south of where the Colgate plant used to be - where Onyx chemical used to be. Whenever it rained and groundwater collected in puddles, it gleamed bright yellow.

I was told that was from the chromium.

A gigantic residential building was built right on top of all that. I saw no sign of any remediation beforehand, but you know, maybe that happened.

Oh God! I just remember it always smoking down there. I would drive by when I was in my 20s and see teh smoke. I never wrote about them, but I breathed it in plenty

"The Jersey City of Alaska" reminds me of when I heard Five Finger Discount described as "The Angela's Ashes of Jersey City".

I mean, you can't get too caught up in trying to make that an exact match - HS's voice and that Jersey humor makes her story less fecking dreary - but it was kind of a cool-sounding thing to say. Wish I remembered who said it.

As someone who grew up in “redneck” Brooklyn and moved to the midwest for a while, I have to say the inherent regionalism that pops up when you mention where you are from and why you moved somewhere else is maddening.

People in the midwest assumed that I had “power” and was somehow “connected” just by being from New York; they had no idea that working class people lived here.

And people in New York who heard I moved to the midwest were baffled by my desire to be in a quieter, calmer, cooler and more affordable place.

People have weird regional self-hatred and biases out there.

I move to NYC in 1980 from NC ....I don't know if people assumed you were less intelligent because of the accent ...I wasn't thinking about it . There were times I wished it wasn't the focus of the conversations I was trying to have . But then again at times I wanted it to be noticed

FWIW, when I was in second grade—2nd fucking grade—kids in Brooklyn gave me crap because I didn’t have a Brooklyn accent. The kids thought my accent was from… TEXAS!

When does this nonsense begin?!?

Accents really vary in Raleigh. Most folks I knew had neutral American accents with southern touches. I grew up there & hardly any of my friends here in Seattle notice much of a southern accent. I can put mine on whenever I want though. My dad, grandparents, & other relatives outside of Raleigh have more of a southern accent than I do. Like Emily said, gets stronger when I'm with my grandparents & other relatives

Oh, interesting - I know there was a big Polish population farther south toward Paulus Hook - I guess the OLC church is still active there - but I didn't know there were many places to live among the warehouses.
