I have that Velvet Fog track on an album of his mono hits that I bought -- well, of course -- at the FMU Record Fair.

You should title this week's show "The Golden Age of A&R Men".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, lots of jazzers were digging into contemporary stuff with gusto. Some better than others, but these are all great.

i've had a gin gimlet (with cucumber) just once and i have little clue as to how she made it...but it seems like a drink from the era and scene represented in that set.

g @10.33 i don't know. many people (especially people not from england, where those chocolates were from) didn't know what that song meant until years later.

Gin with cucumber sounds great. Cool...it was nearly 100 here today.

I didn't know it was about candy for years, either

gimlets are easy. it's like 2 oz gin (supposed to be London Dry, I think), 1 oz lime juice, 1/2 oz Roses' Lime Cordial. or along those lines. my classic cocktail book is packed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
coelacanth∅:

oops! here's your gin. and here, i made you a gin gimlet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

I've got a nice Rosé. It's too late to start with the mixology. Those of you in other time zones (or less bourgeois sensibility), go to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm

That's OK. I'm good with my caffeine free cola for now.

Parq:

You guys are gonna say "There goes Parq with his screwy jokes again" but I swear this is true. Elton's "Benny" crossed over a little and cracked the R&B charts for a couple of weeks in the mid 70s, and -- yes -- they had him on Soul Train.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Funky16Corners:

That clip of him on Soul Train is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Funky16Corners:

The Billboard R&B Chart book is a bible of mine, and there are bunch of interesting examples of pop artists crossing over into the R&B charts in unexpected ways
Avatar 10:57pm
geezerette:

Just reminded me of "Electric Mudd", which I like a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Funky16Corners:

The Isleys have a ton of cool covers like this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Parq:

Yeah, their take on the Seals & Croft hit "Summer Breeze" is a killer.
Avatar 10:59pm
geezerette:

Ha, actually prefer to original.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm torn. but I dig them both
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Funky16Corners:

BTW James Taylor CANNOT have this song back.
Avatar 11:02pm
geezerette:

Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
coelacanth∅:

yeh this is way better than the original.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
coelacanth∅:

"love the one you're with" may be my favorite cover the Isleys did...and i have no complaints about the original.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, they dipped into the Stills and Young songbooks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
coelacanth∅:

hahaha! this is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Funky16Corners:

Isn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
coelacanth∅:

again -no complaints about the original!. i still pull out my Melanie 45s sometimes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Funky16Corners:

I love Melanie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
coelacanth∅:

the flip of "lay down (candles in the rain)" is "candles in the rain", which is also good (though not the masterpiece the a side has on it); but the album does not have it included and it seems unavailable on anything.
- my 45 is pretty scratchy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Funky16Corners:

I only have the album. I'll have to look for that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
coelacanth∅:

(the album does have that song, but it's shorter.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm

Home from the library. ROCK IT, GROGAN!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm

Doug! Back on the books. Mrs. Parq, who teaches non-matriculation ESL courses at a local Community College, wraps her summer session tomorrow night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Funky16Corners:

My wife teaches ESL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Parq:

Going back a bit (I've been eating dinner and downing the Rosé), the version of Love the One You're With for me is Aretha's, on her Fillmore album. Great version of "I Want to Make It With YOu" on the same side. And I dug Melanie as a person more than I dug her songs (sound strange, I know, can't explain it any better).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Funky16Corners:

That Aretha Live album is fantastic. Great band. Melanie Just played some dates in the city. I heard good things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Parq:

Larry, no kidding! I am on the off-ramp of my career, and Mrs. Parq is just starting this one, so it's a great process for me to follow what she's doing. She is fairly fluent with Spanish (it was her first language) and most of her student population is Latino, so that is a plus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Parq:

Larry, dig up the CD re-release; it has the unedited Ray solo. Bliss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
Funky16Corners:

My wife teaches mainly kindergarten kids, so she gets them at a good time. Even though a lot of the kids come from homes where the nuclear family includes a lot of non-English speakers, they are primed to learn.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
Funky16Corners:

I love the mid-period Herbie stuff that bridges the post-bop with the funky stuff
Avatar 11:48pm
northguineahills:

I also love his "ambient jazz" period.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, Herbie is a deeply talented man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Parq:

Oh man, I *love* this Meters version of Stormy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, very spare and dark compared to the rest of the album
Avatar 11:53pm
geezerette:

Terrific show, Larry!
Good night all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
Funky16Corners:

Thanks! Have a good night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
coelacanth∅:

Parq @11.32 for me, the highlight of that Aretha album was "don't play that song"...about 35 years ago! likely my preferences have changed since then.

even though i liked rnb as a child (being -and that helping me to be- the black sheep of my family) i didn't (& still don't) like Aretha Franklin that much. my record club sent me that album by mistake when i was about 12 and probably ordered a led zeppelin album. i was pissed but i decided to keep it - and play it fairly frequently.....but i haven't listened to it in many years.

Coales, if you're still here, I was actually just thinking about that -- that incredible walk-off that caps the first side of the original LP. I'd give a lot for a time machine that would enable me to be at that show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
Funky16Corners:

Nite all! Thanks again for taking the time to listen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
coelacanth∅:

Parq was that her guest, Mr. Ray Charles, getting pissed at the audience? i'm having trouble remembering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am
Parq:

Uh, I don't remember that, C, and I've listened to that album quite a lot. Possibly at that, I just missed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am
coelacanth∅:

...i have to dig that record out and give it a (new) spin.

- Thanks Larry!
good night all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am
