It's funny, I grew up with Traffic records as a kid. Then I didn't pay them much mind...but when that Smiling Phases comp came out in the '90s I fell hard again. Then I got to see them open a couple of Dead shows...very cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Funky16Corners:

Wow! I just looked it up. I forgot that it was a Diffrent Strokes spinoff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm

Love Traffic. Spent a lot of 17-year-old money buying an import LP of John Barleycorn Must Die

It took me a long time to finally start listening to music completely with my ears, as it were, and when I finally did, the first two Traffic albums became totally mesmerizing and hypnotizing experiences.

Mike, I didn't know the first two albums till I was college-age. I don't know how I came to listen to those other ones so hard when I was 14.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Funky16Corners:

They were getting a LOT of play on FM rock radio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Uncle Michael:

No FM at boarding school...just the LPs. An older cousin probably gave me one of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
Funky16Corners:

That's always good. I had a cousin gift me all the early Genesis LPs, which I would have missed for a years otherwise

What a story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, so sad, so much promise
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Doug Schulkind:

Of course, if he hadn't been in the hospital recovering from his burns, he may never have been given a guitar and learned to play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Funky16Corners:

True, but it seems like he had to learn that, to make his mark, and then continue on into oblivion. It's poetic and tragic at the same time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Doug Schulkind:

One could do a full-length radio show presenting exclusively artists whose lives were destroyed (or nearly so) by horrendous misdiagnosis of illness or mental illness. So many creative geniuses who were sick but thought to be merely junkies by someone wearing a white coat.
Avatar 10:49pm
geezerette:

Had to come back to say I was galvanized and had to see who that was. Such beauty and sorrow. Stories like that make me nuts.
Grateful for all this.
Off again, tip of imaginary hat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes indeed. Drake was the same way. It was like he was put here in earth for a very brief time to make his beautiful music and then was snatched back into the ether.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm

Thanks G!

Hello all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
coelacanth∅:

Katell Keineg has a beautiful version of river man as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Parq:

Doug, Jeez! I never heard those stories! This savage "health care" culture we have in this country is just incredible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Funky16Corners:

Health care, racism, institutional and otherwise
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
coelacanth∅:

James was very bitter about being "ignored" for all those years and didn't embrace his "rediscovery" very gracefully. -'probably didn't do his health any good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Doug Schulkind:

Rediscover this, muthahfuckah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Funky16Corners:

The whole wave of rediscovery is rife with issues of race, class etc. I'm thankful it happened though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Funky16Corners:

Selfish, I know, but all of that music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
coelacanth∅:

yeah - though John Hurt seemed to have a good time with his rediscovery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Funky16Corners:

John Hurt was a saintly fellow, in every way. His music brings me a great deal of peace and happiness
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
coelacanth∅:

damn...now i forget who's quote this is; a female i think, who said
"i didn't need no 're-discovering'. i knew where i was the whole time."
  11:09pm
Dean:

Mendelssohn rediscovered Bach. Or is that not exactly rediscovery? Anyway, I'm thankful *that* happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Funky16Corners:

I'd rather we have Skip James music to talk about now, than trapped in a stack of shellac 78s in a landfill somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Parq:

I remember hearing the Flamingos track when I first, as a 17 year old, saw American Graffiti. I was stunned. Ever since then, I have felt it was one of the most gorgeous vocal performances, to say nothing of the languid and redolent arrangement, I've ever heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Funky16Corners:

That's where it got me too! One of the finest pieces of recorded music ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
coelacanth∅:

i do not feel at all ashamed to agree with that sentiment. it's not any more selfish than taking a cookie that someone baked then left behind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
coelacanth∅:

(re: 11:10)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Funky16Corners:

Hopefully Skip, and Mississippi John and Son House, and Robert Johnson are off in the ether somewhere smiling because people love the music they made so much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Doug Schulkind:

Beyond rediscovery, discovery itself has been bumpy and problematic process for many. Conscientious debaters have both supported and criticized the John/Alan Lomax phenomenon. (I come down on the pro side, but with sensitivity to concerns thoughtfully raised.) I agree with you, Larry, that it is way better to have found/preserved than not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes. The same goes for most recorded ethnography. The methods/reasons/ethics were often problematic, but those moments were captured forever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Funky16Corners:

And speaking of 'greatest records ever made'...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
coelacanth∅:

i agree with you Doug. yes there are concerns - not least of which who benefited by far the most from those recordings, monetarily...but then - would any, if not more than a very few, of those artists have ever gotten anything at all if it weren't for the Lomaxes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Parq:

Yeah. Can you believe this got *heavy* AM radio play?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Funky16Corners:

Drilled right into my 10 year old head by WABC-AM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Jeff Ash:

Might I say that this evening's program thus far is a throwback to the late-night free-form FM radio I grew up with in the early to mid-'70s. The silence of the night taken in unexpected directions, with plenty of head space for sussing out what it all means, or what it might mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Funky16Corners:

That was certainly my intention. I'm very happy you picked up on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Funky16Corners:

Can we get Norman Whitfield's head carved into a mountain somewhere?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
coelacanth∅:

the temps themselves thought it was craziness! (and resented that the instrumentation was such a big part of it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Jeff Ash:

Amen, Brother Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Funky16Corners:

Hang in, it's going to get even Temptationier and intrumentier!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
Funky16Corners:

I don't think for a minute that Whitfield could have done it without the Tempts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Funky16Corners:

This is the sound of the radio buried next to my pillow in 1972, with the volume low enough that my folks couldn't tell I was still up at midnight
  11:27pm
Dean:

I'm catching a whiff of ends-means rationalization. I'm a librarian, which means I'm at least professionally in favor of preservation. But it occurs to me, as it never has before, that librarians and archivists strive to collect and preserve with an eye almost exclusively trained on the future, i.e., for generations of readers/listeners/viewers to come, rather than to credit the creators.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
doctorjazz:

I had one of those pillow radios in my teens...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
coelacanth∅:

haha,no! he had a vision but they didn't dig it. some members never got comfortable with the change in style that he steered them into. (i think that's why Ruffin left, eventually...?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Funky16Corners:

I think all we can do at this point is rationalize. I'm not going to stop listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Doug Schulkind:

On this all debaters universally agree: Larry Grogan is a treasure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Funky16Corners:

Don't bury me!!
Avatar 11:30pm
geezerette:

Here I am again. Anyone who hasn't seen Robert Flaherty's "Moana" with soundtrack of carefully restored field recordings of traditional
Samoan music, must do so. His daughter Monica was responsible
for the project. en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Funky16Corners:

I think Ruffin and Kendriks were both long overdue for a solo shot. I think it's a crime Levi Stubbs never really got to step out on his own from the Tops
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Doug Schulkind:

Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
coelacanth∅:

(...i think i'm mistaken about Ruffin. he may've left before that recording)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Funky16Corners:

That Moana looks really interesting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Funky16Corners:

Now here's one that ought to be billed as 'Norman Whitfield with a special guest appearance by the Temptations'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Jeff Ash:

Dang it, Larry, you're gonna make me pull out all my Tempts records, and probably all the Undisputed Truth, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Parq:

What Doug said (@11:28) adjusted to accommodate Larry's request (@ 11:29).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Funky16Corners:

You can however dig me up as often as needed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Funky16Corners:

Someday I'm going to twist someone's arm into making a Whitfield boxed set
Avatar 11:34pm
geezerette:

You are all treasures.
Moana is stunning.
Good night,all.
  11:34pm
Dean:

We have no choice but to rationalize, true. But when we listen, we probably owe it to ourselves and to the artists to do so critically.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Funky16Corners:

Listen to that rhythm guitar ringing in the background, like six string metronome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Funky16Corners:

Nite Geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Funky16Corners:

@DEan - ALWAYS...also I've had many stern discussions trying to disabuse people of romantic/stereotypical ideas about old time blues singers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
Funky16Corners:

The same goes for trash rock/R&B/garage fans who idolize people they think are drunken wildmen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Funky16Corners:

Who were working musicians/creative people
  11:37pm
Dean:

And, I'll repeat, for Bach.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
doctorjazz:

We got the funk riff there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
coelacanth∅:

show business...or i guess in some cases snow business.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Funky16Corners:

Or, as the late Jerry Lewis might have said, "The business we call show"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Funky16Corners:

Get ready, Whitfield is about to jettison the Tempts and exit the stratosphere completely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
Jeff Ash:

Note to self. Pick up that "Car Wash" soundtrack you have seen so many times while record digging.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
coelacanth∅:

earlier today someone said Iggy Pop is a vegetarian and rarely drinks (which really shouldn't surprise anyone with open eyes)...but it reminded me - though i didn't mention it then, that i've had a hypothesis for years now that Keith Richards is not the party animal people think he is; and maybe never has been.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, a while back when I found out that Whitfield had done a bunch of instrumental music for the movie I grabbed it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
Funky16Corners:

@C- I agree. I always thought it served Mick and Keef's purposes to APPEAR to be dissapated aristocrats, but they never would have gotten this old if they really were as marinated in chemicals
  11:50pm
Dean:

Is it true that Hank Crawford was the saxophonist planned for this Washington record?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
Funky16Corners:

I hadn't heard that, though it's certainly feasible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
Funky16Corners:

I'll have to play more of the early 70s Grover stuff in the future
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm

Sax seems to be Grover according to Wikipedia... Great sounds, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
