@Flash - I've been on a Twin Peaks kick the last couple months... read 'The Secret History of' book, re-watched Season 1, and the 'key' episodes of Season 2, then FWWM.
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
JtotheK:

@Danny - I'm also caught up, as of last night. I had to watch parts 1 & 2 twice, because I'm reading the recaps in the Times after each episode and realized I missed quite a bit... Parts 3 and 4 also fantastic, can't wait for Part 5 on Sunday.

Marfa instigates a chain of associations. Robert Irwin did a huge installation in Marfa last year. One of Irwin's important proponents is Lawrence Weschler, who wrote a book about him. I work with Weschler's brother. His and his siblings' maternal grandfather was Ernst Toch, an intriguing emigre composer best known for his film work in Hollywood. My colleague remembers, vaguely, parties at Toch's Santa Monica home with luminaries at the time.

@Dean - i looked up Toch to check if I've seen any films he scored...alas, i have not. though 'the ghost breakers', 'dr. cyclops' and 'ladies in retirement' all sound intriguing...
  10:27pm
Dean:

@JtotheK: His most famous work is not a film score. Look up "Geographical Fugue."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
coelacanth∅:

damn, that looks so good, hyde. i don't know what i'm thinking though; even if it was closer i just got asked to stay at work, in connecticut, through saturday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm

Trying to catch up on everything right now but, Dean, I know the Irwin work well - I work for the museum (Chinati) behind it. And Weschler is a frequent guest here in Marfa

@coel well, then, i'll do a stage dive for you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
coelacanth∅:

...that jerry's kids album (they only did the one, right?) is one of the most amazing punk albums of all time!
  10:31pm
Dean:

I kinda figured that might be the case, LD. I see him now and then via his brother. Most of the time I just report to his brother stuff in which I figure he (or both of them) would be interested.

Avatar 📉 10:35pm

@coel Is This My World? is the early 80's LP that's killer. They had pretty much the best stuff on the This Is Boston, Not LA comp too. there is a late 80's record too (Kill Kill Kill) which is only OK.
  10:36pm
Dean:

No little irony that bad weather upsets the 'net, which was designed to survive nuclear blasts.

hyde@10.33 i know! i liked reading that whole conversation on Flash's show, after the fact. we were sort of on the same road, it seems. (though i think we've determined that before, no?)
...i'll admit though - i slam danced plenty, and even not so long ago; but i never did a stage dive.

I'm loving the new Twin Peaks. I feel it's what Lynch originally wanted w/o catering to a major network in the early 90s...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm

Another Marfa association -- singer Tift Merritt did a radio show for a time this century, The Marfa Spark - but unsure if it originated there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Dano59:

TP The Return is very weird and dark and a little wacky, kind of flipping the equation from the original series.
Avatar 📉 10:44pm
hyde:

@coel @Kris Kill Kill Kill is fine, but not great. better than the late 80's SS Decontrol and Gang Green records! there's a mid 80's 45 called Spymaster that's pretty good. i'm kind of excited to see them.

i think beyond them and Siege (who just had a recent show in NYC with John Zorn) there aren't too many 80's Boston hardcore bands still standing.
  10:45pm

Oooh, I need to find out more about that Tift Merritt show.

i first saw it on the Blues series that Martin Scorcese did a few years back, it's the only footage of him to surface, cut in colour by some friends of his at their house but unfortunately the sound was lost so they had to match it with a record of the song he was performing

Danny! Listening to wftu and decided to go into the archive. Found Love Not Have I on the playlist. Thank you! I just want to say about the awkwardness of the title that I was 15 when I wrote it. I titled it: "Love NAUGHT have I" which makes sense. The great Bob Crewe, who produced and arranged it, changed it to "Love NOT have I" the night we recorded it. I KNEW it would come back to haunt me! Bless him anyway. He was great!
