Not the Trumpet of sunrise - of reveille - not the trumpet that wakes up to rise into Order - but the Trumpet that shines burnished brass muted light into dark corners & new fields...The sly Street of the past, the electric culture of the future...
I really like that Geoff Dyer book! I read recently someone else saying that it shouldn't work as well as it does, but it does. That seemed on target to me.
Peter - I had an inkling it was like that. Thanks. Guessed it was fiction but still a good read and has spurred me on to further investigation of these musicians.
Beautiful writing but not insightful. That's interesting. It's a great photo: as much as he always touched my core - the typical image of Trane is pensive & serious: his Music was all the publicity he cared for it seems...I'll have to read it & see if it annoys me!...
@Stanley you're in for a lovely afternoon! if you like to read to music, look for Jerry Granelli's A SONG I THOUGHT I HEARD BUDDY BOLDEN SING (CD inspired by the Ondaatje novel) -- and a great CD that stands on its own if you haven't read the book
Love that Tzadik, Daft and Goldberg are two favorite, have to check out the CD.
Speaking of Tzadik, bummed out going to miss Zorn in Manhattan today at the Village Vanguard; procrastinated ordering tickets, and they sold out when I tried... :(
@doctorjazz: That it's sold out is a good thing, maybe the positive side is that someone who doesn't know Zorn as well as you do got "your" ticket and will get his/her mind blown open to new things
Off on the Ozzie walk in a few, listen On The phone...
Jeff, I think you can randomly pick an album on Tzadik, and odds are good I'll like it.
(getting another puppy in 2 weeks... Will be my daughter's, but she's home from college for the summer). Hope the training goes better than yours did, Jeff. Any progress? (This Little Women is great!)
@doctorjazz: progress? It's basically all good, though we waited too long this morning, and he dropped a deuce on the rug. So, steps forward, steps backward.
@fred: I don't think Little Women remains an active band. Members Darius Jones and Travis La Plante have moved on to other projects. (There was a second album, though.)
I've told this story before, I'll tell it again. Was shopping at Down Home Records, picked up Bruce Ackley's solo CD. Guy at the register tells the gal at the register, "He's buying your husband's record." Then he points out that Jon Raskin was in the store.
Met Larry Ochs recently, did that concert with Nels Cline in a friend's living room. He was very nice. I was curious about ROVA, how much is written, how much improvised,, he said its ALL written out with ROVA (one of the reasons he liked the gig with Cline)
I recommend this outdoor show featuring Cooper Moore, Roy Campbell, Darius Jones, Rob Brown, et al.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8f6CTWBU6oE (Says only 1 view, but I've played it at least a couple times. Must be a different upload.)
I just went through the batch of tickets I received yesterday for next year. I couldn't take a day off to go the season preview, so I was 3 or 4 days late in booking. I have mostly crappy seating, sometimes not on the day I preferred. This is insane, and I've been buying 20-30 tickets a year at this theater for 25 years
Happy birthday Doug!
There are a bunch of DJ birthdays in late May: Rob's was a few days ago, Mayuko's in on Tuesday, and I think Bronwyn B's is around too
11:53am
Doug Schulkind:
Thanks, fred! Uncle Michael just had a B-day, too.

Was that a chicken playing trumpet on the Miles Davis track?
It's no holiday in Scotland, some English business, not ours.

In my own mind, I classify the Dyer as fiction. Not sure how the publisher marked it...

A few years back, Tom Abbs donated a kidney to save the life of artist and FMU fan MP Landis' life. I always love Tom's music extra much.
