Hi Joe! Great work closing the marathon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Fuzzy:

Wow -- speed it up, boys!
  12:13pm JakeGould:

And thanks Joe B. and Todd for all the hard work these past two weeks. Nailed the marathon the same day Chuck Berry checked out during lunch. What a weekend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Guido from Cologne:

Hello Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Gaylord Fields:

Joe, as those extraterrestrials who discovered the Voyager space record once said, send more Chuck Berry!
  12:15pm Cooh John:

Glad I got to run away for the weekend and join the WFMU circus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Gaylord Fields:

@Cooh John: Well said! And good to meet you!

Heya Joe. Lovin' the Chuck!
Avatar 12:17pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@JakeGould: Thanks buddy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Gaylord Fields:

Sorry to get sentimental here, but I'd like to think Billy is telling Chuck about his faithful pooch Little Queenie right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Gaylord Fields:

And right on cue, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm MattBelow:

@Gaylord: They don't call 'im the People's Champ for nuthin'!
  12:20pm Cooh John:

Great to meet you, Gaylord. I was wondering if my limerence for WFMU was unhealthy. But after being there the relationship is no longer virtual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Bootsie:

The Killer!! I think the the Reaper is a-scared of him.
  12:20pm Stevel:

Never heard that Kinks cut. Almost as fast as The Dickies.

Talk about an eternal artist. You hear Chuck Berry everywhere. He made a whole bunch of building blocks that you can't work without if you claim to play rock and roll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Gaylord Fields:

Yes, Joe is, Matt. He certainly is.
Avatar 12:21pm Cecile:

Hey, Joe!

What a fundraiser! I bet it's great to not have to wait until Monday or Tuesday to make the goal! Wonderful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Gaylord Fields:

Wow, Allen Hill — one of Chuck's many rock & roll children — just checked in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm nickybones:

  12:42pm Eric Hat:

FLG
Avatar 12:43pm SmokinJ:

@Planet Tyler: We still do! :)
  12:44pm Cooh John:

Got to see ELO play 'Roll Over, Beethoven' where the double bass was played like a guitar and a single green laser squiggled on the ceiling. Cutting edge rock theatrics in the 70's.
Avatar 12:45pm Joe B:

ELO great version. thanks for coming down this weekend John!
  12:50pm Mark in Toronto:

Shout out to Johnny Moped's version of Little Queenie, sung in hilarious falsetto.
Avatar 12:52pm Cecile:

I know Dave Edmunds has done some smoking Berry covers.
  12:53pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Congrats on another great Marathon, Joe B!
  12:53pm Angela:

Four times today the player online has just stopped playing. I don't think it's the sound cutting out, it's like the player pauses after a time. When I push play the set starts over from the beginning, and I instead have to closer the player and reopen it from the website.
  12:54pm Cooh John:

Thanks Joe. It was a great experience. On par with the time I got to sing Johnny B. Goode with Eddie Angel backing me.
  12:57pm Mark in Toronto:

Mr. Edmunds has covered at least 4 or 5 Chuck Berry songs. Also good is Shadows of Knight doing Let It Rock
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm blee:

Rock In Peace
Avatar 1:01pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

I've only heard Ronnie Hawkins sing "Forty Days" I think. I just assumed the penal code in Canada called for an extra 10 days.
Avatar 1:02pm Joe B:

get ready to hear it again!
  1:03pm Mark in Toronto:

Don't forget a semi-obscure B-side called Drifting Heart, beautifully covered by Tav Falco's Panther Burns
  1:03pm Mark in Toronto:

Todd, it has to do with the exchange rate.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Hoboken Jack:

I have 40, do I hear 50 days? Going once, going twice....
  1:05pm Hackensack Slim:

I'll see your 30 Days and raise you 10.

Great job these past two weeks Joe and All of WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Amanda Nazario:

By my count it will be 70 days before he gets home
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Gaylord Fields:

@Mark in Toronto: I'm no Canadian lawyer, but I believe there's a hate-crimes statute that adds 10 days to any maple-syrup-related infraction.
  1:06pm Clïff in Prägůe:

Canada even has a Global Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve (look it up, it's true)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Gaylord Fields:

@Amanda: The rock & roll recidivism rate is rather high, alas.
  1:07pm Andal:

@Gaylord, great to see you at the finale last night. It made me so happy that fmu made the goal ahead of time!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Gaylord Fields:

@Andal: Thanks! It's a great feeling!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Parq:

I'm late joining the conversation, but I just had to say how much I enjoyed Chuck's "My Dream" at the end of the first set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm fred:

@Cliff: Does NJ have a strategic reserve of pork roll/Taylor ham?
  1:11pm Clïff in Prägůe:

fred, if they don't, they should!
  1:13pm Mark in Toronto:

Thanks Joe. It's such an atypical song.

  1:16pm Frank Above:

What? No Decca audition of Memphis?
  1:18pm KP:

Best punchline ever: Send more Chuck Berry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm MattBelow:

@Matt F: Being allowed to use the EMI 4-track machine sure made them do some wacky overdubs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Gaylord Fields:

@Joe B: The Capitol version of "She's a Women" is so echo-drenched, it's practically a different song!
  1:19pm KP:

Congratulations to Joe and the station. These times deserve WFMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Gaylord Fields:

@KP: SNL's funniest/greatest moment. I do not exaggerate.
  1:23pm Woo:

The version Reelin' on the London Sessions is great musically, a bit much with the extra raunchy lyrics.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Curious:

Question: Do you DJs keep notebooks or something to list songs that you don't want to forget to play when an artist dies? Or when the time comes, you just wing it? Signed, Curious
Avatar 1:26pm Cecile:

off to a meeting, back soon I hope.
Avatar 1:26pm Scott C. from New Hartford:

A tippo the space helmet to you Joe, and to Todd and Gaylord and the whole proud crowd at WFMU for another miracle marathon! I'm loving the selections this afternoon. Hail hail Chuck Berry!
Avatar 1:26pm Joe B:

winging it today. i do have a list for one artist that shall remain nameless as to not jinx it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Gaylord Fields:

@Woo: Yep, there's a lot more mucus play in that version.
Swag For Life Member 1:27pm tadpoles:

Hey Joe. Possible to play "No Particular Place To Go"? One of the first singles I ever bought as a teen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Gaylord Fields:

Howdy, @Scott! Glad you're enjoying Joe's Berry pickings as much as I am!
  1:28pm Mark in Toronto:

Is it Little Richard? Bob Dylan? Paul McCartney? Ringo Starr?

  1:35pm Frank Above:

Cheers Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Dominick:

These kids ain't half bad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Tim 07030:

Listening to my older sisters' records growing up, I think I played The Beatles 'Rock and Roll Music' (not this version) and The Faces 'Memphis' more than anything else. I am also pretty sure that it was a long time before I knew they were a) covers and b) written by the same person!
Avatar 1:40pm Scott C. from New Hartford:

I always love hearing "All Aboard", in which Chuck hops a train that first winds its way through my neck of the woods "...Albany and on we go/Utica, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm MattBelow:

And they say the Beatles were only showtune thumpers...HA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Dominick:

Yessssssssssssssssss!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Gaylord Fields:

Macca knows baseball rules about as well as Chuck does! (I think the Grateful Dead's version gets the count right, so I give them credit for that.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm Parq:

"Promised Land" always makes me think of the Midtown Tunnel scene in the first Men in Black movie.
  1:44pm Miss Georgia Peach:

ZYDECO? Hell yeah!
  1:45pm Mark in Toronto:

Can't we get Johnnie Allan to say "...terminal zone" instead of "...terminal gate" so that it rhymes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Tim 07030:

I wonder how many people have dialed Tidewater 4 10 0 9 in the last 48 hours?

Crazy Arms was a different Chuck Berry vibe than the usual. Nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Michael 98145:

whoa, thank you, Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Gaylord Fields:

Part of the genius of "Nadine" is revealed in the last verse, when Chuck explains why she's worth all the tsuris.
Avatar 2:19pm Cecile:

Skyhooks did a great version of Let It Rock. Australian bands loved their Chuck Berry. I swear in 1975-76 every band had to release a cover of his.
  2:20pm Cooh John:

Talk about freeform, my dad heard Maybellene played over and over continuously on a radio station when the song came out.
Avatar 2:20pm SmokinJ:

Fuck the cover bands. This is CHUCK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Gaylord Fields:

@Cecile: AC/DC, as just one example, owes a huge debt to Chuck.
  2:23pm Cooh John:

Cecile, I saw Skyhooks! Can't remember what they played.

Cool, CJ!

Gaylord, exactly. I'd watch Countdown (the AB of that era down under) and just about everyone would do a Chuck Berry cover if they didn't have a record out. It was a great way to learn the back catalog!
  2:26pm Clïff in Prägůe:

You used to live in Australia Cecile?
Avatar 2:26pm Cecile:

Yeah, I lived there from 75-76 while my dad was teaching down there. I lived through Abba-mania.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Gaylord Fields:

I'm always amazed by the things that Aussies go absolutely bug-eyed pee-pants gaga over, like Abba or Seinfeld.
  2:34pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

Thanks for this one, Joe!!
  2:34pm Clïff in Prägůe:

But do they like Lady Gaga?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm MD:

Hail Hail WFMU!!! HAIL HAIL ROCK AND ROLL!!!
Avatar 2:40pm Cecile:

they LOVE Eurovision, too. Now they are officially part of the song contest!

I got turned on to Monty Python and Roger Glover's the Butterfly Ball when I was down there, too.

Billy Joel, Blondie, and Little Feat all came to Australia and people adored them. After that, they all went back to the States and started doing very well.

About Gaga, I don't know. Probably doing quite well down there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Gaylord Fields:

@Cecile: Have you been back in recent years?
  2:42pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

Man I wish this whole show would go on another 3 hrs.
Avatar 2:42pm Cecile:

No, sadly. I'd love to go back. My old high school classmates checked in with me a few years back...

Saw Chuck in '88 at the Poughkeepsie civic center--he was backed by local dweebs improbably named Fat Max and the Bluescasters. It made no difference to us, it was like going to Mt. Olympus or getting an audience with the Pope. At the concert's end, Chuck invited the audience onstage to dance during "Johnny B. Goode". Pure shit show. As Chuck was duckwalking, a 13 year old kid touched Chuck's arm--Chuck took three fingers and poked the kid in the sternum--hard!--and pushed the acolyte about 3 feet back. I turned to my buddy and said, "rule #1: you don't touch Chuck." In all ways, nobody does, even now.
