Favoriting March 16, 2017: Marathon Week 2: Keep the Faith

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Artwork by Evan Crankshaw!

For pledges of $75 or more: ¡Magia Negra! A dip into the cool blue lagoon of Latin exotica. The ‘50s and ‘60s were exotica’s moment, the Tiki jazz and Polynesian pops of Martin Denny and Les Baxter selling by the million and radiating postwar America’s misconceptions of non-Western cultures right back at itself. While they’re rarely discussed, Latin musicians took naturally to exotica. From ambitious voodoo suites by popular orquestas to wiggy jungle jazz 45s by local congueros, a discography of mambos, cu-bop, boleros and chas would be rendered in a swirl of bird calls, vibraphones, flutes, percussion and nightclub atmospherics. ¡Magia Negra! is but a sample.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
In 1991, I applied for a job at WFMU. At the time, station manager Ken Freedman was the station's only employee, and he was hiring a person to sort of run the office, direct the volunteers and do all the fundraising fulfillment and stuff. So I got an interview and went out to the station to meet Ken. He gave me a bunch of hypothetical situations to see how I would handle them.

One of the situations was this: The station is planning to give away a pizza-scented air freshener as a premium in the next marathon. How will you make this happen? I forget what I said or did, but I got the job.

And WFMU in fact DID give away a pizza-scented air freshener during the next marathon.

And now you know THE REST of the story.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm

45s, 78s...lotta numbers coming atcha, but not enough numbers comin' at Little Danny - what say, listener-who-hasn't-pledged-yet?
  10:35pm
MrFab:

That was taken from a 78?! How does it sound so good?
  10:37pm
Dean:

Been reading reviews of recordings of Prokofiev's works. His works for me trigger synaesthesia, music that has a certain taste. The reviewers evidently agree, as they allude to vinegar and other acerbic flavors. I totally understand how a recording invokes absinthe and cloves.

Gigantic thanks to listener Dominic W. of Austin, TX, for a premium-sized pledge, noting "Dan's the best!" - and who are we to argue!
  10:59pm
Dean:

I'm not listening, Jeff. I'm making dinners for kids and the better half, who will return in an hour or so from work. But I do experience synaesthesia now and then. I just wish I could find the musical work that evokes the sublime pastrami sandwich from Johnny's on Sepulveda in LA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm

May all our canyons be misty! May all our flames be blue. And cool.

Dean, most good or interesting music evokes colors, places with their scents and climates, the sensation of being in a specific kind of architecture to me too. Although maybe thats not
synaesthesia...

Scraps, yeah! Cognitive dissonance for sure. I saw an interview once, not knowing what he would like, and he was sort of robotic. A sweet, kindly expression that never changed no matter how clueless his ideas seemed to be.

Damn, I somehow didn't track on the Bollywood prize. I was admiring it....
Avatar 11:04pm
Scraps:

what is the current cd prizes now....?
  11:05pm
Dean:

geezerette: Yes, and synaesthesia refers to confusions of sensory experiences that aren't merely metaphorical. Still, what is the pastrami symphony? I want to hear it. Slathered in hot mustard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
