Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from March 10, 2017 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

JP from KC - you can 'spend' up to your annual S4L limit throughout the marathon. When you go through the pledge process, tick 'No Swag', then click on the 'send me a bill' tab and put a note in the box saying 'from my Swag for Life pledge' or something like that.
Have fun and play these shows like a proverbial slot machine.

Dean:

See, instead of that weasly, "Depends on what the meaning of 'is' is," Bill should have said, "I don't know what the meaning of 'is' is, but it sure is funky."

Started listening to WFMU via The Hound whenever I'd visit NYC from Boston in the mid-eighties. Such astounding radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
JP from KC:

I have been listening for just over a year. I found out about WFMU through an article on great low power stations from paste magazine, and tuned in about a week before last year's marathon. The first thing I remember hearing was the Captain Beefheart loop Chris M. uses as bed music. I was totally hooked from there on out, and pledged as soon as the marathon started. Been listening almost daily ever since!
Avatar 12:58pm
Matt in Nebraska:

First WFMU show I heard was Michael Shelley doing a fill-in (it might have been a fill-in for Fool's Paradise) with one of the guys from They Might Be Giants on a Saturday night in February of 2000.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
Gary:

I think the first show I ever heard was Doug's Holy Warbles tribute
  1:02pm
Dean:

Can't remember. Diane Kamikaze? Tony Coulter? My email suggests it was in 2005, a buddy referring me to an archived Brian Turner show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
Parq:

I did not see that. Way to go, Doug. Are you taking a grad-school course in fundraising?
Avatar 1:03pm
adrian in mpls:

Doug's show first got me hooked - maybe around 2007? Fridays with Doug, and then Bryce, became a staple for me. And then Saturdays with Michael Shelley and Fool's Paradise. But I first learned about the station in the late 90s thanks to Yo La Tengo -- I was obsessed with YLT and heard about their marathon cover performances.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
JP from KC:

So it appears the WFMU fundraising scale is filling up with people who died in 2016. I've been able to identify Fidel Castro, Abe Vigoda, and Alan Rickman. I don't know the other two, though...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Webhamster Henry:

I think I randomly tuned in not knowing what it was - terrestrial WFMU's signal is notoriously elusive - but eventually began specifically tuning in for Irwin, Ken, Kenny G ... and eventually I just kept it on all the time with a special antenna setup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
Lane Gray:

Support it, y'all!
