Today would have been my mother's 86th birthday. It's the first I've spent without her. So crank it, Little Danny!

Hi everybody! Set of mostly 45s opening the show so I gotta be on my toesies!

Doug, I will raise a glass to your mother.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm
Little Danny:

@Doug: will do! What kind of music did yer mother like?
Avatar 10:09pm
Flash Strap:

I'll join you in raising that glass, Scraps. Doug: Blessings and praise upon her memory. Love to you.

Doug Schulkind:

My mother's taste in music was fairly abysmal. She did love Sweet Honey in the Rock, however.

@Doug Ha! I'll see what I can do

nice tunes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Little Danny:

Thanks Melinda, and hello!

Dean:

Celebrate moms. Mine, approaching 90, turned me on to Billie Holiday, Rachmaninov, and Burt Bacharach. Otherwise, her taste flounders pretty much. For instance, I used to play old Rod Stewart records on my crappy turntable at home. "Turn that down!," she'd demand. Fast forward a few decades and it's, "Isn't that Rod Stewart a wonderful performer?!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Little Danny:

@Dean ha! Rod wears everyone down. I'm holding strong tho

Just came back from a jazz quintet concert at the performing arts school across the street from where I work, and am back at my desk. Monk, Shearing...man, like, those kids were swinging like a rusty gate, dad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
melinda:

I like Tonight I'm Yours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Little Danny:

That's awesome MrF - "rusty" can be a good and bad thing of course but definitely applies to some school jazz bands
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Little Danny:

Jaki Liebezeit can be so damn funky
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Little Danny:

Also, anyone care to spell Ege Bamyasi for me phonetically so I don't totally embarrass myself?
Avatar 10:44pm

I've always just said egg-eh bah-məyahsee but in truth i have no idea
  10:45pm
Dean:

Happy to oblige.

oh-WAH ta-GOO sigh-AM

MrFab:

Gave me hope for the future.

As for "Ege Bamyasi" I've always mentally pronounced it 'edgy bam-yas-ee' but have no idea if that's correct. Or if there even IS a correct pronunciation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Little Danny:

Okay, thanks all, I'm heartened that no one really knows how to pronounce it. I'll just go with my eh-jay bomb-yasi
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Doug Schulkind:

Oh this is nice! I did a Summertime songtacular a couple of years ago, but didn't have this version: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Little Danny:

You got a lotta o' my fave versions in there Doug! But I have some additional biscuits up my sleeve - got a major thing for "Summertime" here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Doug Schulkind:

Now is the summer of our content, with the Cool Blue Flame.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Little Danny:

In my archaeology days I camped for a summer in the National Forests of Utah and it has forever been thought of as the Summer of Our Discount Tent, which it was
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Doug Schulkind:

Nathan Davis is an under-adored treasure. He was on the faculty at the Univ. of Pittsburgh for around 40 years. Retired a few years back. What a swinging genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm

yep! quite a resume Davis!

Any information about who played on and (especially) who wrote it is welcome.
Avatar 11:13pm
Scraps:

I doubt I would stay if Joe Cocker essayed a take of Summertime
  11:15pm
MrFab:

I'm not usually too interested in the personnel unless it's someone really notable...tho of course that's a judgment call.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Little Danny:

Oof, yeah, Joe Cocker. Rough stuff
Avatar 11:16pm
Scraps:

Probably Mandy Patinkin would result in one less person in the room, also.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
Little Danny:

Thanks for the input MrF and Scraps!
Avatar 11:18pm
Scraps:

I guess that means (for me) Summertime would not benefit with a Histrionic approach.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
coelacanth∅:

i just listened to Joe Cocker yesterday; his great versions of "the letter", "feelin' alright" and "delta lady".
now if a version of summertime (a song i also truly Love) came on by pretty much any currently popular pop or rnb singer, i'd be outa here.
...that said, i agree Joe's probably wouldn't be good; but i'd give it a chance.
Avatar 11:21pm
Scraps:

Also Whitney/Mariah melisma-laden approach, no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Little Danny:

Vocal histrionics rarely do much for me. I guess Yma Sumac being the obvious exception.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
coelacanth∅:

...i also think his version of "with a little help from me friends" from the woodstock album easily rivals the original.
...still, yeh, generally not a fan - of him or "histrionics" in general.
Avatar 11:24pm
Scraps:

coelacanth, cocker's The Letter makes me shudder.

Cheers!

(Love Yma Sumac. She pushes the envelope so far she emerges on the other side.) (Really, I don't know why I love Yma.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
coelacanth∅:

that's why Peggy Lee is so very high in my mind, at least during her prime...she sang simple and pure and right on target.

-Scraps! ha, i love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Little Danny:

Ahhhh Peggy Lee
Avatar 11:26pm
Scraps:

I agree completely re Lee
  11:28pm
MrFab:

To me there's a distinction between show-offy, and the nuts who just go for it, throwing themselves into a song with all the passion they can muster: Yma, Nina Hagen, Lux Interior...ever heard Puerto Rico's utterly bonkers La Lupe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
coelacanth∅:

- of course my opinion may have something to do with that i heard Cocker's versions of all the songs i mentioned before ever hearing other versions. (except "feelin' alright", which was 3 dog night AND rare earth's version.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
coelacanth∅:

MrFab- absolutely. i think that's why i don't mind Cocker so much, because i think he falls into your latter catagory.
Avatar 11:35pm
Scraps:

He goes for it, and collossally misses it.

;-)
Avatar 11:36pm
Scraps:

And it's TO ME, I realize that
Avatar 11:36pm
Scraps:

Cocker is polarizing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
coelacanth∅:

nah. well not here anyway. i can't stand most of what i've heard i just really like a few songs... enough that i'd always give him a chance...but i cannot listen to a Joe Cocker album. no.
Avatar 11:42pm
Scraps:

Got it.
