A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Has anyone heard the recording of Patti Smith reading a Ginsberg poem about the death of his guru, accompanied by Phillip Glass on piano? It was some kind of Ginsberg tribute concert after *he* died...Patti almost broke down in tears, but powered through it, brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it.

It feels somehow wrong to say so, but 2016 has been a great year for me, possibly the best one yet.
And as far as musician deaths go, let's not forget Paul Kantner and Signe Anderson of the Jefferson Airplane who died *on the same day* back in January.

Newark, NJ, which I also love, but Portland holds a special place in my heart. Greenhand Bookshop, Fore Street, weird "Italian" heroes at Amato's, chickadee t-shirts from Reny's...I look forward to going.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am

I live off-peninsula but like to walk around Munjoy Hill sometimes. Greenhand is good, too. I like how you put quotation marks around "Italian", that was my reaction when I ate one of those (I think something about the Puritan heritage in northern New England did a number on the food here, though the 'foodie' trend has changed things).

Westbrook? ... I guess the quotation marks betray my preconceived notions of what constitutes an Italian hero, the most hyper-regional of culinary traditions. I'm not a foodie but, from experience, Portland's restaurants are dangerously good. I'm going to Scales on NYE. PUMPED.

@Trouble: I think southern NE has a large enough Italian population that the cuisine retained its strength. There is an old Italian restaurant here that is supposed to be good, but man, the worst Italian food I had was in Barre, VT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am
melinda:

@PRB: I live on the other side of Back Cove. Portland does have a lot of good restaurants, one of its claims to fame these days. Scales is a seafood place, right? I think I had some great chowder there when it was in a previous location. I have a lot of dietary restrictions these days so I'm not riding the foodie wave like i might be otherwise.

Avatar 10:50am
(Murakami Whywolf))):

I remember 'recommend' as 'I commend this twice'.

The `don't bob your hair' thing was ostensibly about 1st Corinthians 11:15's stating that long hair were a gift from G-d as a covering, but really about rejecting the modern world c.1925. I once got a school notebook from Japan that read at each page's bottom 'This book is friend to bobbish girls', so I'm guessing that 'bobbish' meaning 'modern' or 'hep' entered Japanese—or at least a Japanese-English dictionary someone used in 1980—in the 1920s, when Japan was rapidly modernising, including flirting with liberality and democracy (but ending-up reactionary-fascist, which loads of people seem to basically prefer).

@Brian: two sides, at least, to that story. The haters referred to his Corsican surname as a slur (not a Frenchman at all!); it was common practice across Europe for hundreds of years to call the Monarch by their first name: Henry the 8th, Louis the Sixteenth, etc., so Napoleon got the same treatment.
