A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Since you mentioned Trevor Noah's book, not that this is a shameless plug for my employer or anything, but supposedly Noah's own narration of the audiobook makes it the highest-rated audiobook of 2016 or something. Anyway, be good consumerists and buy sh*t at Amazon using this link so it supports FMU! smile.amazon.com...

I like your imitation of bad radio voice.
  10:11am
JakeGould:

I think radio voices came from cheap AM radio sound quality. Kinda like the way that 78 records gave weird sounding voices due to the old school recording techniques.
  10:12am
Anonymous Coward:

Radio Voice - several different sources. Radio was thought of as a theatrical medium, and many of the practice of the day (1920's) carried over. Also, AM. To overcome the distortion of early AM systems, precise diction was encouraged.

I hope leftists keep thinking in the manner Trouble just explained. Keep up the pejoratives about Trump voters. Keep sorting people into sets. Label those sets and talk about how one set is not equivalent to some other set. Keep thinking that these calculations demonstrate anything of interest or utility.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am
Trouble:

but why do they persist with these awful voices?? do they think we like it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am
Mark the Sardine:

Trouble, you bring up an excellent point - the "radio voice" had to come from somewhere. My top-of-mind guess is that radio was popularized at a time when, as the first mass medium, people were looking for - or at least accepting of - "the voice of authority." I think Laurie Anderson has played with this idea in her performances (downshifting her voice to then make absurd pronouncements). Later in the postwar years, when entertainment partially took the place of that "authority," the radio voice became more like morning DJs and game-show announcers - "hey there!" etc... these days, things have developed further and the game-show voice sounds dissonant. I'm glad we have YOUR voice today, Trouble.

@Trouble: Because it's just a historical thing? If radio is a commercial medium on those stations the business perspective is to not mess with a formula that works.

Passaic River Blues:

Matters have a tendency to calcify and reify over time into the "proper way to do things". To most ears, it just sounds "right". There is the historical pedigree of carnival barking sliding into vaudeville emceeing and early radio, and the fact that one of the elements of fine oratory used to be "proper" elocution, clipped and clear enunciation. Above all, is the fact that a clear and "interesting" modulated voice is perceived to have greater utility in maintaining listeners' attention in between advertisements (most radio is nothing but an ad-delivery system). Never thought of this before, but that would be my assumption.

As much as I vociferously disagree w/ g's political opinions, he has a certain (condescending) point. A lot of different people voted for that monstrous con artist for what I suspect were a lot of different reasons. The R "big tent" shifted quickly & unexpectedly. Terrifyingly, some often naturally side with the bully and punch down, thinking to keep themselves off the bottom rung by stepping on someone else. But not all.

If there are any bullies out there, they're on the left. Which is weird as they seem to be perpetually 'terrified' of this that and the other these days. If nothing else, it's extremely entertaining.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am
ⓘⓚⓔ:

It's funny that many Rs used to denounce "victim culture" but now take part in it and like to play victim. There are bullies in all groups but only one candidate in 2016 epitomized bullying above all else. That said we can all agree to love the music of WFMU.

Passaic River Blues:

That is an opinion worthy of respect. However, I don't think you yourself even believe the statement "If there are any bullies out there, they're on the left" after we all just lived through Trump's two-year rage-athon.
