Yeah, but it's not really that simple. First, Bush Sr. signed the original NAFTA. Bill revised it to add better worker rights and environmental protections and re-signed it. Everybody forgets that. Anyway it's way too late to go back to protectionism now. The trade war will destroy our economy. The nihilistic side of me hopes Drumpf does it so that conservatism is crippled for generations to come, a la the FDR era, though in this new era of propaganda, the rich and powerful will probably just successfully reassign blame to Democrats somehow.

Ike is right i think. double think. in the uk the propaganda machine has sucessfully convinced everybody that there is no money because the poor people have taken it all. this is quite a feat i think

FWIW, you know how some people in NYC consider people in the outer boroughs to be "hicks?" Like folks on Staten Island? Don't expect people to care about the rust belt when they passively (and consistently) alienate their own neighbors for the stupidest of reasons.

Hi friends. Two ideas have been haunting me since before the actual election; that the Civil War never ended and we are reliving the aftermath of Reconstruction, and that we are, and have for some time been living in a Huxley-Orwell world.

That Crescent record is so bleak, but I always really liked it.
  4:27pm

The CA secession bullshit has been going on for some time. Drive north toward Oregon and you'll pass signs proclaiming the border of the country of "Jefferson." There are counties in the north with delusions of sovereignty.

i love this crescent. never heard before
Avatar 4:28pm

Dean, the U.P. keeps threatening to secede from time to time along with Northern Wisconsin.
  4:29pm
Dean:

By "north" I mean north. I'm in the Bay Area, conventionally regarded as Northern California, even though we're just about smack dab at the center of the coastline. Hence, I suspect, the wounded feelings of those marginalized to the true north.

Ken, the northern border counties are trying to create a 51st state called Jefferson. I pass through it on my way to Portland. A bunch of angry farmers and white trash who feel marginalized, and their response is to create their own government. Local level failure.
  4:38pm
Dean:

*state of "Jefferson"

I got a little carried away there.
  4:40pm

The stupid thing is that they can create their own government! Freedom of association and all that. It just can't be sovereign.

They don't feel like their concerns are being heard because...their concerns are not being heard. I think there's more to it, too. They are rightly demoralized by this country's failure (if you'll pardon the expression) to even pretend to uphold the values we traditionally associate with America (alternatively, the values we associate with traditional America, the one at the founding).

@Dean - yes, I remember the "warm and fuzzy" times, or at least echoes of them, too. It wasn't like everything worked swimmingly well, by any stretch (and indeed there was much to dread and loathe in those years, of course). But you didn't have this sense that some character out of a David Lynch movie was about to grab the wheel of the bus you're on, and send it hurtling over a cliff, at any moment.

Just try searching today for california secession online. The first several dozen results are all from the past day, due to MSM coverage of these yoyos. But if you view the wikipedia entry on Partition and secession in California you'll see a deep history. The more recent history, which long predates the 2016 POTUS campaign, demonstrates that there are many who felt like they were riding the Lynch bus well before this latest upheaval. This is a reality only clearly acknowledged by Trump.

Don't forget John Bolton. Gotta have John Bolton.
