Of course they diverged strongly in the 40s, with hard-bop jazz and 12-bar blues (and subsequently, rock 'n roll). I suppose those who still support those genres are thinking of it academically and historically, instead of trying to play music that syncs with each other. (Or, they consider the improv "jam" styles of both to have a similar enough vibe).
