I always thought it was a thing for US hardcore bands not to look too hardcore in general: so many of them just wore t-shirts an jeans and had a variety of hairstyles, usually short, but there was no shortage of long hair either.

Most of the bands started out looking really hardcore, but as soon as they either graduated from high school or heard the Stooges, they let a lot of that stuff go. The audiences were more fashion addicted than the bands in general.

I remember seeing cool, somewhat prominent bands come into town and it was refreshing to see that they didn't look at all how I'd imagine them - none of the punk accoutrement you would think. Just regular dudes or gals playing on stage.

I don't really fault the UK bands for sporting "the look" though: music scenes, for whatever complex sociological reasons, have always been more tribal (for lack of a better term) in the UK in their identification, which goes back to the days of the mods and rockers. There were/are definite looks that go with being a skinhead, punk, mod, suedehead, etc, each with its own class/social/political associations. I remember back in the 90s arguing with an English friend of mine (and bandmate) who insisted that the Ramones couldn't be a punk band because of the long hair.

Interesting that you played Voivod. 1992 was my actual last year of any kind of touring activity. My age started to betray me. Actually my embouchure collapsed and my lips wouldn't purse. Makes it hard to play the trombone, I'll tell you that! Haven't been much of a kisser since, either, though my wife would tell you differently. Sweet, sweet Edna. In '92 I was playing 4th 'bone for Paul Anka and we shared a bill with Voivod at Toad's Place in New Haven. Anyway, I was feeling a bit blue as my medical issues were hampering my ability to "blatt," which is when a 'bone player distorts the lowest notes for dramatic effect. Anka loves blatting and he was berating me nightly and threatening to can me. Voivod's bass player (name?) took me aside and smoked a cigarette with me in the green room. It was a curious tasting Canadian tobacco of some sort. At any rate, my playing radically improved after that - so much so that Anka gave me an extended solo during "Having My Baby." The crowd went nuts. I played only four shows after that. Miss those days.
