Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

There are no guilty pleasures, but I have a guilty pleasure: suburbs. And dying malls. Bracket the racial dynamic that populated the suburbs in the first place--impossible to bracket, I know--and I get a warm cozy feeling from nondescript, generic, regimented streets, strip malls, parks, and such. But I wouldn't complain if Merle sang "Covina Blues."

Alex In Illinois:

It depends on the suburb or type of suburb. At some point, they started making some suburbs without any sidewalks or crosswalks or places to walk or ride a bike, so that one needs to use a car just to get across the street. By now, someone must have set some words of discontent about such an environment to music. If not, then it is about time someone does.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
Uncle Michael:

Alex, those would be the suburbs full of "snout houses."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm

Topeka is a nice size. Big enough to have what you need, and KC is just over the hill if you need a city

Merle's name always puts me in mind of PPL's "I'll Fix Your Flat Tire Merle," which I encountered a LOT in college. Somehow familiarity with his own big hit-making output eluded me then and ever since -- except for Okie From Musgokee, and even at that, in those same college days the knock-off Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother was heard -- on jukebox or drunk-sung by party circles -- farrrr far more often.

I'll admit, I had the impression throughout my youth that "Okie From" was tongue in cheek. It seemed so popular with the very people it was attacking that, to me, it just didn't seem plausible that it was in earnest. Even the Beach Boys covered it (which Spazz played last night), and I can remember watching a TV concert taped in Central Park, seeing longhairs happily singing along with the Beachmen on it. It took me a while to accept that he had been dead serious, and now I know that, by then, his own view was already becoming more nuanced.

Have to say, when Okie came out, I thought it was tongue in cheek as well. The interviews I've read with him the past few days show him to have thought about it quite a bit afterwards, and, of course, to change his thinking on it.

Rich in Washington:

The 80s were a terrible time for country music. I recall working in a cafe/restaurant/lounge as a teen that was run by shitkickers. The music played incessantly on the jukebox was awful. Whenever I could, I would punch in a bunch of older country or the few rock n' roll tunes to try to dilute the (then) contemporary country pap they'd play.

One of the many (many) reasons I'm a devoted FMU fan is that, when we lose someone like Merle, I can always count on FMU to bring me a perspective (or usually, several) that I never had before on that artist -- whether it's someone like Bowie whose work I know well or someone like Merle where (like the Doc) I am mostly a dilettante.

Just a different version of the hit single--never heard it before and really liked it. The hit version from '83 more somber and resigned. Just wondering if version was pulled from the actual record or a compilation. Definitely not a mistake--the cut was fabulous, just different. I can't disagree, Lane.

And this is the wrong version of this, dammit.

I definitely heard this on the radio in the 80s before I ever heard of TVZ...

I had a huge crush on Emmylou AND hers was the first I heard.
And Albert Lee and Hank DeVito? What's not to love.

Well no knock on Emmy, but no human sang "Pancho needs your prayers, it's true" like Hag. Just as good as singing gets. And his verse makes this version

No, not double...I'm not the man Kurt G. is.

Today's safety tip: get a vehicle professionally inspected after a deer strike, even a minor one. Five days and fthree thousand miles after a deer strike, my tie rod fell apart. Because of the deer..

i kind of credit Merle Haggard with getting me personally into country music. I tangentially liked some stuff, but for many years wasn't that into it. Then I went through a period where I'd get CD's out of the public library, and one day I took home an I'm a Lonesome Fugitive/Branded Man double compilation. That was a real whoa moment.

Lane Gray:

Yup. It fell apart in the yard. The strain of a hard cut on a stationary tire pulled it right out

Ever notice that deer have very narrow heads? Even though their bodies are several times the size of that of my dog, there just does not seem to be as much brain room in the deer's head as in the dog's head.
