A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@Trouble I've just been talking about the Ferrantes with someone on Twitter. I just couldn;t get into them and gave up a third of the way through book 1. The Contessa struggled through the lot, cos once you;ve read two you might as well finish but I know she thought book 3 was particularly tedious. But some people really love them.

Well, there are DJs who just drop the needle, and there are DJs -- Mobey being the obvious example, and then there are the guys who play the Tomorrowland fest in Belgium -- whose use of recorded sound is transformative enough to count as a creative work in its own right.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am

@Adrian I can definitely see how readers would find the Neapolitan novels tedious. I didn't find them tedious per se, but there were times while reading them that I felt as if Ferrante were taking that "A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us" Kafka quote very seriously. I love them, but I feel emotionally raw reading them.

Hey Trouble. You mentioned that you had no idea why Gilles Peterson's face was in the CD booklet of Sun Ra and His Arkestra's compilation out on Strut. It's because Gilles selected those 34 tracks. The front cover even says "Gilles Peterson Presents." DJs don't just put a needle on the record. A real DJ knows their music, music history, and knows how to seamlessly mix everything together. This is a lifelong practice as with other musical art forms, and why coveted DJs exist. People respect and admire their deep music knowledge and how they share it with the world thru DJing.
