I guess discovering Bowie is a little like discovering Elvis (Rawk!), & a little like discovering the Velvet Underground (you too??!). I've been thinking that one thing about Bowie is definitely the getting hipped to various albums / parts / phases of his oeuvre - & who did that too you & when. Frankly I'm still discovering Bowie - tho' pretty solid on his earliest stuff...

IMO all of Bowie's seventies albums have some great stuff on them. He was consistently original, inventive, and very, very musical. He always applied great taste to whatever he was experimenting with (whatever "great taste" means)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My personal re Bowie fwiw (we all have one)...though one keeps thinking of still other things to say about him & what he meant :

I was a little brother - my Big Brother nine years older than me - & into Rawk & Glam (I remember it being called 'GlitterRawk' @ the time, but nevermind) even in smalltown NewHampshire. So - more often than not - the music would come half-clear from the other room - thru walls & under doors.
Things like Bowie in the early 1970s & my pre-teenage years, then, were powerful & mysterious indeed. (A sheltered 10-year-old half-hears 'Future Legend': l.facebook.com...… Get the picture?)
Then came self-made cassettes (later taping everybody's albums they had: Bowie's oeuvre was large & diverse & impactful enuff, it was worth long pursuit) & eventually LPs - then occasional films & finally CDs. He was always there.
...videos before 'videos' & of course the visual & theatrical expression: he was an Auteur who seemed to have another level or dimension (or @ least - or even better - suggest them) than other Rawkers...
When Bowie had something new - it was pay attention or be left behind.
Bowie *unquestionably* introduced & acclimated individuals & Society to Gayness more than anyone else ever.
Elvis & Buddy Holly took us somewhere - then TheBeatles - & the Stones took us somewhere...Dylan. Then - the doors & Syd Barrett took us somewhere - & where could we possibly go from there? Bowie was a big part of the answer - & he was no less than that & in that company.
He added to the lexicon & vocabulary as much as anyone. As Abstract Art becomes Universal by not being Representational - by mirroring the internal world of every individual - so Bowie became the strangest kind of Folk Music of the people w/ concepts & artifice.
Titanic.
That was an Artist.

It's weird having this wordplay discussion while simultaneously watching Countdown. (For those who don't know, it's all about word games and math.)

@Chris: yeah, I decided to watch every episode of that again. Just watching episode 1. And I play properly (although if Jimmy Carr does something really eyecatching during the 30 seconds, it may distract me so much that I rewind to the start of the time just to have the 30 seconds to do it.

I suppose you could be in the audience, and then be like that one guy that got the math problem when Rachel didn't and got himself 10 points. Then you'd technically be a contestant. (Of course, if regular Countdown is going on, you could really be a contestant - but I stopped caring about regular Countdown when that douche from The Apprentice started hosting.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am

@Blinda: heh, well, the missing vowels round and the round where you get the board of items you need to organise into groups are the easiest rounds on Only Connect. The rest can be really tricky. Countdown is easier, just having the word rounds and math rounds. Heck, University Challenge is generally easier than Only Connect (unless recent episodes of OC have been really dumbed down).
