Dean:

I've explored a bit the polarity issue with XTC's "Skylarking." I had no idea Rundgren was the producer, which goes to show how out of it chose to be at the time. The details online are sketchy about the album. My guess is that the record suffers from the same problem that plagues many recordings, namely reversed polarity. According to Clark Johnsen, who has been the loudest polarity evangelist--see http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue1/cjwoodeffect.htm--one must determine for every record one plays its correct polarity. Once that's known, you adjust your system accordingly. Recordings with reverse polarity require reversing the reversal: switch the black and red cables on your speakers or, if your preamplifer permits it, switch the polarity there. (My preamplifer is by default reverse, so my speaker cables are always switched, but that won't correct the problem Johnsen perceives.) FWIW, I don't bother.

@Dean AP and TR didn't get along during those sessions. I heard a story where TR is tall has an irregular gait. When he would walk from his house to the studio, Andy and the Boys would play the Munsters Theme.... eh, guess you had to be there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00am

Figures. Now the Munsters theme is the predominant sample, if that's the word, in a song called "Uma Thurman." TR has earned an irregular gait, I suppose.

@coelacanth: "an old fisher tube amp with a switch..." is such a happy phrase!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04am

V Priceless:

Dean: yes, the polarity was reversed during the mastering process, which, to my ears, resulted in an overall tinny, thin sound thoughout. Corrected version is lush and full-sounding, if that makes any sense.

@Bill Mac: Yes, precisely!

AP now in hindsight recognised TR plated a blinder with the production - 2 stubborn heads butting I think! New AP book coming out this year - collected interviews so there may be more insight. Now if TR had tried to impose some of the horrible dated electronic/dance sounds he has more recently killed his otherwise good songs with..........
  2:06am
Dean:

@VP: Perhaps so. But if Johnsen is correct, and if the problem is reverse polarity (as opposed to something else) then anybody could have simply switched positive for negative at the loudspeaker posts and corrected it.

Don't do it, daupomatic.

If I needed a producer/engineer, it'd be Marc Rusch in a heartbeat. His recordings (C.I.M.P.) are uniformly marvelous.

My Bpwie phases = as a teenager I loved the era Space Oddity to Hunky Dory but never understood the hype around Ziggy - I've learned to like it since but not love it. Diamond Dogs great but Aladdin Sane is amazingly good. Station to Station through to Scary Monsters is one of the greatest runs of albums I can think of - wonderful. 80's - frustrating mixed bag but not as bad as some make out. 90's - still don't get the drum and bass stuff - that was his Todd Rundgren ruining otherwise good songs era. Tin Machine better than credited. 2000s - not bad. The Next Day - a bit harsh Bill - it had its moments. Blackstar - what I've hear is great and I almost bought it on Saturday but now I'm going to wait for a month or two to buy it - partly to allow the ambulance chasers to bore of Bowie being their favourite ever pop star (before saying they loved that song of his 'In the Air Tonight') and partly to listen objectively myself.....

i Loved Heroes (& 7 albums before that)then hated Lodger,mostly- and the next one- then gave up on Bowie when let's dance came. the glimpses of his commercial pop hits that i heard through the years were rarely terrible, but not Great either.
...then on friday when i heard some of "✭" i was practically overwhelmed. it's so honest and pure and poetic and i thought "this is what you could've been doing all this time". i felt very happy and optimistic about Bowie then and decided already i'd get that album.
...maybe that's partly why it hit me as hard as it has.

Bowie albums were hit-and-miss affairs for me, except for Pin-Ups, Hunky Dory, and The Man Who Sold The World. The thing is, with Bowie, it wasn't about the albums -- it was about HIM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51am
coelacanth:

well now i wonder if i missed some good music between let's dance and now. i've barely heard anything besides the predictable pop hits since 1983, and it's usually been the "deep album cuts" that were best.
also,"(eyepatch)fox" said ✭ reminds her of "outside", so i have a feeling there's all kinds of diversity in those 3 decades that i'm mostly oblivious to. with his supreme talent for arrangement there must be good in there. i feel foolish for not giving ANY of it a chance all this time.

simon, that marketing always disgusted me. especially the suit/hat,dapper bullshit. but it sometimes was an injustice to the Great music on the albums- as with Aladin Sane,Heroes,Ziggy. i wish he hadn't done that but i guess it's why his name is a household word.

Used to have The Man with the Four Way Hips on green vinyl.
Bolan used to wear ballet pumps, leastways that was what he was wearing when he spoke to me, made my wife mad as hell when I told her.

The dustbin men were collecting just as I was writing earlier.

Remember seeing Vinegar Joe supporting Lindisfarne. The piano player impressed turned out it was Robert Palmer. Loved his early albums with Little Feat. This track is a bit like LF.

Never really liked Ziggy probably because it was electric guitar driven. Thought Hunky Dory & Lodger cooked.

Might see you on the stream soon, old bean?
