Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from September 11, 2015 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I have this paperback book from the mid-'70s, a collection of LP reviews that had appeared in Rolling Stone. It's hella fun reading the contemporary reviews of Yes, Carla Bley, Al Green, Santana, and so forth. Some are by Lester Bangs, a couple by Richard Meltzer, many by Bob Palmer. A few nights ago I read reviews of a couple Donny Hathaway records by I forget whom. Mr. Whom did not like Donny. Really weird.

Jeff Golick:

@Dean: pretty sure I have that same paperback -- red cover? They revised it a little later, took out jazz (which became a separate volume), and turned the cover blue. I enjoy finding changes between the volumes. For example, the red version loved the Doors. They were downgraded significantly in the blue version, much to my delighted surprise.
  12:57pm
Alex In Transit:

Got an adapter in Seymour, Indiana, so now listening through the car stereo. Approaching Louisville.
  12:58pm
Dean:

@Jeff G.: Mine's the blue cover. IIRC, Meltzer reviews at least one Doors record, maybe two. He is a huge Doors fan, which is where our tastes diverge considerably. (He's also a huge Germs fan. We're in complete agreement there.)

I had the impression my blue-covered pbk was a second volume, rather than a second edition, but I may very well be wrong about that.
  12:59pm
Dean:

Also, my blue covered volume definitely includes jazz.

If only I had got a smart phone when they were doing infinite plans I'd be grandfathered in.

"Baby woke up and spoiled my plans..." would be a great C&W tale of woe line.

The Joseph Spence tribute "Out on the Rolling Sea" might be worth a listen, too.

This song is telling me what I need to hear. Ambient synesthesia is real.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm

Are you seeing the scent of your tea with milk, Wilson?

I just zoned out on that for a full minute. You can kinda see the shadow of the small table in the macro if you don't blink. So yeah.

I went looking to see who had covered this Christine McVie song and I couldn't find *any* covers of it.

I'll confess I still prefer the Addams Family, but Michael Shelley was not wrong when he said that The Munsters was much more rock and roll.

"The Association's Greatest Hits" was my first music LP. (Before that, I'd bought a few comedy titles. Explains a lot, doesn't it?)

This Association cut is heard waaay less often in the NYC area with CBS 101.1 now playing stuff from the 70s thru the early 90s. No dis whatsoever to that period, but I do miss what used to constitute oldies on that channel. Hrmph.

Listened to this at work on Friday... just rearranging an insanely cluttered antique store and doin the hinky dink. Way weirder music than we usually listen to but I got there first and set the player to WFMU instead of fucking pandora. The bossman wasn't sure at first but a couple hours in he turned to me and said "this is such a weird variety of music. The way this music is, with all kinds of different stuff, that's how I want this store to look!" Really cracked me up.

Anyway, show made my workin' day. Thanks Uncle
