Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from September 4, 2015 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

The near-atonal croaking of Bob and Johnny on "true -- lov-v-v-ve -- of-f-f-f" is one of the most vivid memories of my adolescence. I got that album from the local library. I actually picture my childhood bedroom whenever I hear that passage.

I picture your childhood bedroom too, Parq.

I remember this Bobby Gentry song! Very risque!

Bobbie! I was hoping the Fancy theme would lead to this one.

Dang! Bobbie Gentry's songwriting is amazing. I had not heard that one before, and I was hanging on to every word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm

Yep, she wrote it.

Parq:

Yeh, that is a terrific little number, ain't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm
listener james from westwood:

Bobbie Gentry has numerous entries in my growing-up "You can DO that in a song?!" playlist. Presley's "In the Ghetto" is another, as is "Sympathy for the Devil." Just perfect, paradigm-shifting unities of tune and storytelling my young self hadn't thought possible.

Gilbert O'Sullivan sounds like a pseudonym.

I appreciate the unflowery, uninflated clarity of this from O'Sullivan:
"I write pop songs. End of story. That's all I wanted to do. That's all I want to do. And that's all I continue to want to do. I have no interest in just touring, and living in the past."

@still b/p: - that's just what I was thinking listening to that Gilbert: it's kinda singer-songwriter, but it's Pop - & we love it.

@doctorjazz: When working @ a CD store, somebody just left a beat-up disc from the green Beach Boys 'Good Vibrations' boxed set - no case or anything. So I know that tune. Love when music enters yer life like that...It's a good boxed set, apparently!...
