I had to Google Upper Hutt. I figured it had nothing to do with a certain Tatooine-based gangster....

Gary, George Lucas jacked the name from the Berber-influenced city of Tataouine, Tunisia. If anyone on FMU has something from that region in their music collection, my money's on it being you!

Howdy, Gary!

@Tusalava: I've got a wee one less than a block away, opened to serve to our growing population of Mexican and other Central American folk. It's ridiculously convenient.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm
Gary:

Aha ... well, I would have to dig around and do a bit of research ... I don't have a lot of Tunisian music, and I'm not sure where in Tunisia it's from ... Rob's a better bet!

@james I have a mixed feeling about Japanese hip hop so I kinda hope the book wouldn't spend too many pages on it. I don't know much at all but Mongolian hip-hop seems to be doing more interesting things. I once heard them mix it with throat singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Gary:

We'll be hearing at least one track from Japan tonight, Mayuko ...
Avatar 7:48pm
northguineahills:

@James: /rupture is in the middle of sabbatical from WFMU to write a book on global club culture, w/ an emphasis on hiphop, it should be out in a year or two. I also believe David Thompkins did a book on global hiphop 10 years ago.

@Mayuko -- I'm curious to see if you'll like what I'm going to play from Japan. It's not anyone super-hip like 54-71, it's a fairly mainstream rapper :)

Thank you! And dang it, the campus music library doesn't hold it, but we have the first Norient title. I have made a purchase recommendation!

Hey, a mention of Sripraphai and Thailand's Center Point. I like both of them. I went back to Sripraphai recently and it was still very good, but I like Khao Kang even better.
Avatar 8:41pm

@northguineahills I'm absolutely ignorant about J hip-hop because the stuff from the mainstream I heard were just awful to me and been staying away from the entire genre. but there must be good stuff if it's instrumental! Let me know when you spend the next 8+ years with your collection and find your favs out!
