Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from August 7, 2015 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

@Mike East: What do you know (ideally, from experience) about Meyer Sound gear? Is it really "all that"? I'm skeptical that better sound emerges from more complex systems, but maybe I'm confusing home audio with public address for big venues. Speaking of which, I'll hear Jimmy LaFave at Freight & Salvage next week. F&S uses Meyer Sound, I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm

@Brian - no, though we did rent stuff to the dems for something last month and all the gear was stolen from the venue.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
Mike East:

@Dean - I know that it is very expensive and high quality and some artists/sound people demand it. We don't own any, so I don't have firsthand experience with it, though I've had to "subrent" it at times at a very high price. On a similar level with L'acoustics. We have mostly EAW here which sounds fine to me. johnk77 has more pro ears than I do, though, so he might have better info.

I know an eency-weency about home audio, exactly zero about professional sound. I'd never heard of L'Acoustics. How precious. Their US HQ is in a California town with the mellifluous name, Oxnard. And they don't shy from a pun: "L-Acoustics Hits The Mark On Knopfler's Current World Tour." Pretty dire, that.

Back in June, for our trip home fromOregon, our sister-in-law made us some granola. At first she was unhappy with the slightly burnt smell that came from the oven and thought she had ruined it. But then I tasted it and found that it actually tasted superb! It had a slightly browned flavor to it.
  12:47pm
Dean:

A corollary, Lane, pertains to live acoustic (un-amplified) performances in venues larger than a large room. I remember stunning sound at Japan America Theatre in LA's Little Tokyo during performances by small orchestras and chamber ensembles. It appears the venue is now dubbed the Aratani Theatre, and was recently equipped with "a newly custom-designed Bose® RoomMatch® sound system." Oh, well.

Not really a variation, no. It's just Rule Britannia played on a different instrument to usual. Crediting it to Quincy Jones is like saying Hendrix wrote 'Star Spangled Banner'....er....except in that case he did kind of re-write it...but you get the idea.

Sorry, Sarah, I was waylaid by stuff. Well, there's "Where the Bee Sucks, There Suck I," lyrics by a has-been wannabe movie scriptwriter out of Stratford. Sounds yummy.

listener james from westwood:

Whoa. To this day I didn't know the name of "Soul Serenade." I only knew it as the kicky instrumental bed Laura Cantrell used a million years ago for some mic breaks. Sounds fine coming outta Lou!

PMD:

@Brian, damn, now I want one or two or three... Honey Stinger has waffles kinda like that.

Lane Steelpicker:

Love the Lou. Like aping the horn bleats on steel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm
Uncle Michael:

That's gotta sound cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm
Lane Steelpicker:

It made me realize that choice of inversions matters. There's a HUGE gulf between "pretty cool" and "awwwww, sweeeet '

Pedro G.:

Sorry I'm late. Just got back from Cleveland after doing Trump and Christie's' hair for the debate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
Uncle Michael:

What do you use for that?
Avatar 2:20pm
still b/p:

I'm curious about technique also. In the portion of the debate I caught, Trump's frontmost hair....area...seemed different for the occasion -- more lightly spun-airy and in soft focus.

@Pedro: I do hope you braided them together.

Saw Elvis Costello and Steely Dan last week @ PNC in Jersey...Elvis rocked, would have thought it was the Attractions from 1978, great set! (the Dan were not quite as good, a bit draggy, oh well...)

Another Hank VIII tune?

Hails, Unc! I catch your show most weeks but I rarely comment, for, as you mentioned, I am usually doing stuff. Much love from St. Louis!

Typos are the most common blood type.

C'mon, don't B negative.

Oh, it does say "1076." I read it as "1976," and I thought that was hella long time ago.
