We'll explore some of the best -- and strangest -- the medium has to offer, from forgotten pre-revolution Iranian songbirds to Japanese and American tape experiments of the 1980s and '90s to obscure Brazilian punk, New Jersey Hardcore and Moroccan rock and roll.

Long ago, I saw a wreck in front of me on the freeway. I stopped to help a Viet lawn mower guy who got carted off to the hospital. After they left, I saw a cassette tape lying at my feet, inscribed with "Nguyen & Sons". I put it in my pocket and brought it home. I get skittish every time I think about playing it.

NGH! They're apparently legendary. If you Google them, one of the WFMU DJs proper -- I can't remember who now -- talks about working in a yard supply store (?) and meeting the singer, who buys a hose from him ... I gotta look it up, hold on!

It was John Allen: "I once sold Danny Cyanamid a garden hose. I was working in a garden center and I said "hey, you're the singer in Cyanamid.". He was like, "wow, no one in the world knows who I am...I guess I'm gonna have to buy this garden hose"

I love this album so much, Holly ... Did you know that it was the best-selling album of all time in Cambodia? And self-released by Drakkar Band on cassette ... I think it went through three editions of 20,000, something like that, and then of course the Khmer Rouge put an end to all that the next year
