A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hello to all. I'm not reading jane Austen because I'm reading The Bat by Jo Nesbo; a crimer, but a good one. Sometimes you just want to sit down with something you can lose yourself in and that does the job.

i disagree ausmanx. her writings, ( from the late 18 century, mind you) are a perfect example of the personal is political. Her awareness of class and gender roles is mind boggling ahead of its time

well, i don't really expect much agreement, but i tend to think her treatment of class and gender borders on the bleeding obvious. her contemporaries were quite uninterested, and her status has risen as we find her more exotic. compared to what george eliot achieved just 50 years later, she seems a minnow to me. but that's not a very popular view these days.

risky: i just wrote it down on my hand, because the only time i think of it is when i play a cut here on tuesday. i shall rectify that b4 next week. my assignment!

@Kevlicki: Because Bruce's project involves extensive digitization, he has been active in the movement to develop best practices for orphan works, i.e., copyrighted works whose copyright owners are difficult or impossible to identify.

The version I'm familiar with is way more salsa-y. And the lyrics are a little different too.

@dean, I'm curious how he manages that! We get plenty of materials that are "unauthored" or unknown, (posters buttons etx

Dean, we also don't claim ownership or control over any of the artworks or images in our collections and tell visitors they must seek out proper permissions for reproductions of anything

Nice, Fish! Yeah, those catch-up conversations out of the blue can go on and on! How long had it been since you last spoke with him?
  11:50am
Dean:

@Kevlicki: Start here: http://www.cmsimpact.org/fair-use/best-practices/statement-best-practices-fair-use-orphan-works-libraries-archives

Chances are you do own the objects you've collected, but you might not own reproduction, distribution, or adaptation rights. I met Bruce at an event in preparation of the Best Practices linked above. He seems not so risk averse when it comes to this question. If somebody sends him a credible take-down notice, he'll comply.

Man, that's really cool. Those friendships where you can go ages without seeing someone, yet you can talk and hang out like no time has passed at all. That must've been sweet. :)
