Howdy, Jeff and Jeff! Snowed in with work and a bit of snow, but wanted to say hi before the wondrous tumult began.

Watching an awards show...being waterboarded...

Touch choice.

Hi Listener James! Hope the music helps to melt some of the snowed-in work feeling.

Uncle Michael - This year's Oscars was less like waterboarding and more like extreme sleep deprivation.

A tentet !
And not the little or feminized tent kind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
Jeff Golick:

Hey, tr`sh! They left the last -ettes off for savings?

Believe the cello solo/opening was by Fred Lonberg-Holm.
  12:14pm
Dean:

Heard these guys at Victo in 1999, the performance released as "Stone/Water."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
Uncle Michael:

So you're saying that being waterboarded is at least a bit more interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Dean. That must've been some show. The recording is great.

@UM: I think that pretty much sums it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm
Jeff Golick:

@UM: Are you coming out East for the marathon?
  12:21pm
Dean:

There's a killer moment with Lonberg-Holm, Kent Kessler, and William Parker on "Short Visit to Nowhere." Good vibrations.

Yeah, it was an impressive show. I recall most vividly Toshinori Kondo bent over like Miles, spewing and sputtering synth-treated noises from his horn.
  12:24pm
Dean:

Also heard Lonberg-Holm with Vandermark at the Empty Bottle last time I was in Chicago, c. 2000. Heading there again at the end of March. Staying one block from Jazz Record Mart. Can't wait (for the Jazz Record Mart part of the stay)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Jeff Golick:

Start saving now, @Dean! If any Chicagoians are lurking, Lonberg-Holm is playing with Lotte Anker tomorrow night at Corbett vs Dempsey. Free show, 6:30pm.
  12:28pm
Dean:

Please do provide tips for shows and venues, nights of March 25-27! Is CvD at a fixed location? Regular shows?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
Jeff Golick:

Fixed location -- it's also (and primarily, I think) a gallery -- but irregular shows.
Avatar 12:30pm
Jeff J:

Dean - sounds like it'll be a great trip! Jealous you got to see the Tentet. I've Brotz a few times, but never in such a large setting.
  12:34pm
Dean:

The best Brotzmann show I've heard was right here in Berkeley at a now defunct space, Jazz House, with the Full Blast trio. Holy criminy, what a din. Heard Susie Ibarra there, too, Fred Frith, and Maybe Monday.

Will look up CvD.

This astonishingly great group is Hemingway with: – Michael Moore, reeds; Mark Dresser, bass; Ernst Reijseger, cello; Wolter Wierbos, trombone.

Glad to have you aboard, @coelacanth!

Hate to rub it in, but during the 1998 Victo festival Hemingway's quartet played with Clusone Trio. Both groups played separately, too.

In the domain of jazz, I revisit this personal experience: I'd never heard of Alice Coltrane. For a long time I'd never heard of her. And then finding a far longer term preference for her music.

Squidward! Which reminds me of a scene in the show 30 Rock, where the NBC page Kenneth, who, on just getting cable TV for the first time, asks NBC head Jack Donaghy, "Is SpongeBob Squarepants supposed to be terrifying?" To which Jack replies, "You're darn right he is."
