	6:17am Sem Chumbo: Hello, fred. Deep into 3 more recent Pynchon novels, over-my-head deep, really. All-consuming.

	6:27am Sem Chumbo: Nate, saw the film of I.V., and decided to read the novels surrounding it, then on to the main event. This is going to take a little time. TP has lots to say and it is a head-full to absorb:>)
	6:33am Sem Chumbo: There's something Zappa-esque about those horn fills.
	6:47am fred: I liked Inherent Vice, though not as much as some other Pynchon books. Like Bleeding Edge, it's short by his standards and more focused. I think it's a good one to recommend to someone who hasn't read him and wants to try, it's not as overwhelming as the big ones, which tend to take a hundred pages or so to get started
	6:50am fred: @Sem: "Against the day" will sure take a while
	6:52am Sem Chumbo: @fred: yep, lots going on in the first hundred pages, as you noted. It's OK, have a couple of weeks to do little else, so it's all good.
	7:01am fred: "Mason & Dixon" is probably the most accessible big one, in my opinion. Though like many of his books, it tempts people into giving up for that first hundred. I read that the many music references in Inherent Vice are an integral part of the book. Unfortunately, that's not music I'm familiar with, so I didn't get that. The book still works without it, at least it did for me
	7:05am Sem Chumbo: M&D, Bleeding Edge and ATD: those are the three I have open now. No cabin fever for me this month!
	7:13am fred: I'm a software developer, so my reading takes people unprepared. After talking about favorite books, a coworker bought Infinite Jest. He gave up after maybe 20 pages, and came to complain that a friend of his told him it was so difficult it was almost unreadable. Said friend was doing a thesis on American literature (in Italy). Word got around and that cemented my weird cred at work. I do love that book

	7:36am fred: Footnotes... I met very few people who have read Infinite Jest (like two). Some would say I've met more, but the others said they skipped the footnotes. I say they haven't really read the book, it's like giving up halfway through it

FOR REAL THIS TIME! With a mind-boggling combination of talent and a rock-and-roll pedigree that will leave your jaw on the floor, the members of the Hard Quartet likely need no introduction. But for the sake of due diligence, the band features Stephen Malkmus (Pavement, etc.), Matt Sweeney (Chavez, etc.), Jim White (The Dirty Three, etc.), and Emmet Kelly (Will Oldham, Ty Segall, etc.).
