I loved seeing real Jesus Freaks at the festivals back in the day.

Simon P, Stanley feel free to tell some stories.

@Nate - New Years engagements to fulfill but will oblige at future date!

Stanley:

Poor ol' Jesus Freaks. Serious cases of acid casualties, looked after well-meaning Christian sky-pilots. Ran a great kitchen at Glastonbury and danced a lot. There was also this guy called Jesus who was a permanent fixture at the festivals and concerts in London. In those days there was little support for the burn-outs, except the God squad and they made a lot of conversions from these guys.

Sem Chumbo:

Went to a concert one time with a friend who'd been speeding for about a year and a half, he suffered a sudden attack of methamphetamine psychosis during the proceedings. He thought he was Jesus Christ, started proclaiming the Good News to everyone, VERY LOUDLY so I spent the night with a really freaked out Jesus freak*l*

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49am
Sem Chumbo:

@Stanley @ 7:30: he did not, he became an evangelical and exhibited almost none of his pre-freak-out personality. His new persona was very amiable, he was just not the guy I grew up with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53am
Nate K:

Crazy story, Sem. Just saw this now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57am

Anybody offering insights into why the occult gets a grip on us for at least part of our intellectual development? Listening to FMU I hear so many groups mining the shit out of the hell/Hail Lucifer/depths of depravity/doom/apocalyptic/There-is-nobody-as-far- gone-in-sin-as-me vein...a little goes a long way. Zeitgeist, giving the music buying public what it wants, or what?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01am
Sem Chumbo:

@Stanley: yup, that seems about right. Grasping for solidity, any solidity, in the midst of the natural order of the world, which our left brains percieve as chaos. One man's opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Rawk comes from Blues comes from Vodoun (West African spirituality). Rawk is Gospel w/ dirty lyrics. It's foundational to it. Think about how central to our lives this Music is - & how much it makes Society nervous, & is Outside it. There's a reason all this is so. 1st thing White Man does is get rid of the African's & Indian's drums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Terence McKenna calls it the 'Archaic Revival'...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21am
Sem Chumbo:

RevRab:I get the kick-back against socialization, the taming of the id for the greater good, the glass ceiling of control we bang our heads against just as we think we are *outside.' Because the mob-mind, the atavistic, is just a shot away, just a kiss away, just a wild jungle rhythm away, scaring the be-jezus out of the status quo.
Love Terence McKenna, btw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...there's the distinction between Pagan & Satanist - but what's repressed comes out - & we're in a Christianist society - so as dopey as it is, it just *feels good* to growl 'Satan!' @ the top of your lungs - just basic compensatory psychology...Jefferson Airplane saying - whatever you say we are - we are we are !
...There's the great Van der Graf Generator song 'White Hammer' about the historical situation of the Pagans & Witches taking on the Black mantle under the Burning Times...
