Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from January 2, 2015 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

We're really getting on the dance floor next set...I'm sure you played some of them but I haven't read through the whole playlist,

Anyone on the board familiar with blues clubs c. 1992 in Chicago? [yes, a memory gap-lapse I'm trying to bridge]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm
Guido from Cologne:

A term "Electric Banana" appears in the lyrics of Donovan's "Yellow Mellow".

In his autobiography Donovan explained that the phrase "electrical banana" was a reference to a yellow-coloured vibrator." (from Wikipedia)

Maybe...what's the question?
Avatar 2:23pm
kat330:

Well, I already did the online searching and came up with bupkis, at least I don't *think* the club I went to on the north side was called B.L.U.E.S.

In Spring '92 I went to some small club and saw Albert Collins -- I THINK, that's right and not Albert King (I know, for shame on me, but I have a good excuse for back at that dark time). Wanted to remember for sure so I could tell the local Kentuckiana Blues Society prez about it without some obvious inaccuracy.

A naming game/direction, of course, that Steely Dan played their own version of, Guido.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm

kat, there absolutely was a club by that name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm
Guido from Cologne:

would that make a dj-premium theme:
bands named after vibrators?

With all due respect to the Bee Gee's flawless production, the ultimate version of this song is by a pre-CHIC "The Big Apple Band": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJhyd4fJtas
Thrillingly intense.

kat330:

@Guido: The local mythology around that lyric was it was some psychedelic drug ref and that "smoking banana peel" would make you hallucinate. My ex-boyfriend at the time fashioned a shoebox +bulb to make a plastic banana that lit up. Ah, innocence!

A collection called "Everybody Hum Along."

Will check it out, CDF

@UM: I know for sure there is one *now*, but couldn't confirm if it was in operation in 1992. You know that for sure? And whether it's at all possible Albert King (who died in December that same year) would have performed there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm
Uncle Michael:

It was there in the mid-'80s and it's quite possible that he played there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm
listener james from westwood:

My guess on this Hava'ed up track was the Salsoul Orchestra.
Avatar 2:32pm
kat330:

@UM: Ah, OK then and thanks! Don't want to look too foolish before the dude who said he's playing one of my own blues tracks on his show this evening. He mentioned his fave concert was Willie Dixon at the Wise Fools Pub in Chicago before and around that time.

I hope my broken brain remembers this right!
Avatar 2:34pm

Well, I'm pretty certain the word "Blues" something or other was the club's name, but didn't quite remember it as JUST that and like it was an acronym.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm

It opened in 1985.

Was this ever a studio version? I've only heard live versions recently but my memory tells me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm

It's not *really* live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm

Then this must be the version we heard back in the day

Thanks, Dean. I also tried like the devil searching for performance dates of both Albert's from '92, but had no luck in that either. My first memory was it was Albert King, so I'm going to stick with that.

Speaking of "ask and ye shall receive" through Internet info: I was concerned about how long "Interstellar" is, and so I put in search terms for "best time for bathroom break" and, sure enough, there was a discussion forum about it. And the info was solid, too, as I found out firsthand.

Dean:

For an abbreviation, "etc." sure has a lot of syllables.

Speaking of Chicago in March, I'll be there this year at the end of the month (23 years to the day, in fact, that King played). Any recommendations for good clubs along the lines of Empty Bottle?
