That is the simple sad privilege of being white in America.

Even when things may seem at their darkest, we should never give up. Important realization of your perspective in relation to others, Therese. Very good thought to share with us.

When cops catch (non-violent) people with beers on a train, that should be the way of dealing with it for *everyone*. The sad fact is certain people will get so harassed over what isn't a big deal.
  12:50am
Paul:

Hey but now you can carry around a bit of a baggie full of pot without being arrested. Summons though. Let's see how that one gets enforced…
  12:51am
JakeGould:

Therese, you know how you are not supposed to have dogs on the subway unless they are service dogs? Seen tons of them on the train. Big and small. Never a hassle. One day on the L train a kid gets on the train with a big pit bull that was so gentle it was like magic. Just curled up in a ball bothering nobody. Guess what happens? The conductor saw this, calls the platform cop and the kid and the dog are ripped off the train. Happened 1 year ago and still stuns me.
Avatar 12:51am
northguineahills:

July 4th 2013, I was at a rooftop party w/ permission in Bed-Stuy, and the cops came and cuffed me and four other people (all white, even though the makeup of the scores of other guests were all over the rainbow, including my brown Mexi wife), and they ran a background check on us five, and gave us a summons for trespassing. Eventually, the charges were dropped. That said, the cops were polite, and no one was hurt. I talked to a retired cop who was a coworker, and he said it sounded like a reverse stop-and-frisk operation to get the numbers up of people of my demographic. All it did was cost me was 1.5 hours cuffed to a pipe and a few months later, a half day off from work to go to court.
  12:54am
KP:

Or is it the Cavalier State
  12:55am
JakeGould:

Matt from Springfield: I feel what you are saying but it’s not exactly equal treatment that is the issue as much as many laws and rules are really ignored if you are white yet “enforced” if you are black.

How many kids are arrested in NYC every day for just being kids? How many times have a I passed white kids stoned out of their skulls after school and smelling of weed that it’s clear what is happening. Yet how many non-white kids get hassled for smoking one measly joint on a park bench?

The imbalance in the law is not in enforcement as much as how much the rules are “bent” for one group and not for another. I mean if you get technical, jaywalking deserves to be enforced more, right?

Matt from Springfield:

That's true Jake, but that shows just how deep this problem runs. Until this becomes a concern to either the police themselves (not so likely) or the public to agitate against it (likelier, though many don't see a problem with the status quo), how one looks is going to remain a factor in the hammer of justice for some time.
  1:03am
JakeGould:

Folks, let me explain the imbalance based on a loon in my neighborhood. He is a neighborhood drunk named “Bobo”. He’s white and Irish. He grew up in this neighborhood. Everybody knows who he is. Drunk morning, noon and night. Craps on the streets. Sleeps in the streets. One of those guys who you think, “How does he survive?”

Anyway, he’s no longer on the streets because he threatened to behead an Arab woman and attacked her with a garbage can. Sounds good right? He has 34 PRIOR CONVICTIONS for this kind of crap. Was he EVER seriously locked up? Nope. 100% no. Now he’s locked up. But here is the thing: HE IS ALIVE!

He was convicted 34 other times and is just a bum… But he finally get’s locked up now. Not shot 18 times by cops. He’s alive and locked up.

Which means, if this guy was not white. If this guy was black, the chances of him being locked up or dead are off the charts.

Steve-O:

@Jake: The disparities are indeed bothersome, no matter how you look at it. But, if I must say so, I kinda do have a problem with labelling such as "privilege" of the least affected group, mainly because it often seems to imply (from what I've seen) that this actually literally "benefits" said group as a whole. Although I would think that most here would agree that such is not the case, it does worry me because I've noticed a lot of people have a much harder time accepting the truth of the matter if framed in that way, because it often doesn't come off too well, even with the best intentions in mind.

For those of us more active in social justice circles, I've been wondering, at least for the sake of educating the general public, what would work *better*. What about just plain "systemic disadvantage" would work? It *does* get straight to the point, without the risk of accidentally confusing and befuddling people.

Anyway, just thought I might put that out there.

When the Band Aid record came Mrs. Albini's sister noted that she looked just like someone pictured on the record sleeve; it was a member of Bananarama. Mrs. Albini told her sister that during a school trip to London her class had toured the recording studio and she had been invited to sing on the track. For many years after any time the sister heard the Band Aid song she would tell her friends about her sister being on the record. Was Lotte Lenya's character a Pilates instructor?

Found this Pilates “Reformer∏ board video with a ridiculous soundtrack. “Mr. Bond, we will reform YOU! BWAHAHAHAH!” www.youtube.com...

Are we counting "Never Say Never Again" as Bond canon? I will bet a dollar that there's a deleted Pilates scene floating around from that one...

I'm not sure about a deleted Pilates scene from "Never Say Never Again," but I'm pretty sure Mickey Rourke made Kim Bassinger do Pilates in a deleted scene from "9 1/2 Weeks."

Joe Cocker's "You Can Leave Your Mat On" was used in the scene.

I think Delta Dawn (tanya's) was the first 45 I ever played. Older sister's, no doubt

@blee: Aw man, that stinks. I only got to watch a few of his episodes(one I remember is his take on "Snow White"), but he was genuinely into it. R.I.P. Chesperito. May your memory live on.

Well, anyway, good show tonight, Therese! The conversations we had were also interesting.....thanks. And have a wonderful week! =)
