Hi - great show start!!

Hello! Therese, I know we're only 20 min. in, but this mix of upbeat pop has improved my mood dramatically. The worst part about my day was the fact that it wasn't really all that bad. Will be here listening for the duration!

I'm reading that David Lynch remixed one of Agnes Obel's tunes. Seems like a natural pairiing.

  12:53am
rw:

Time of the BLAH indeed. The days seem over before I can any momentum going. Plus, I don't know if this phenomenon occurs anywhere else in the world but after Daylight Saving Time ends traffic seems to get worse and worse until Christmas. Okay, enough grumbling. Back to work and this early Can! Woo!
Avatar 12:57am
Bad Giblet Zero:

@rw: I know some people feel some psychological changes due to sunset coming an hour earlier. We've been subconsciously programmed to be productive during daylight hours. A sort of panic sets in when it's dark outside and you're still at work. That probably spills over into how people drive. Couple that with the onset of the holiday travel and shopping season and it's enough to make anyone feel hurried.
  1:00am
JakeGould:

BGZ, in my case my job revolves around sitting in front of a computer. And that’s just not healthy. Happily I have a more flexible schedule now so I can just decide to go out when it’s sunny. But man, it still feels like you can be caged-in when working.
Avatar 1:05am
Bad Giblet Zero:

I take for granted how cushy I have it to get to work from home [or wherever I happen to have my laptop and an internet connection] until I have to go somewhere during daylight hours.

When I'm out and about I encounter lots of people that are absorbed with texting or looking something up on their phone. They're not paying attention to what's happening around them and in turn they cut in front of/bump into people. I try to have the mindset that if the worst thing that happens in a given day is someone bumping into me with their shopping cart then that's a pretty good day.
Avatar 1:05am
-andrew-:

It's weird, I was trying to figure out how to relate to that. But working third shift, my daylight schedule is pretty consistent. It's dark when I leave for work and it's light out when I go home. Obviously that's not really normal either and I'm sure it will lead to some health issues at some point. But I do see the increase in traffic issues. Like BGZ said, I think the holiday anxiety is a big part of it.

During the American Music Awards earlier there were a few mentions of Taylor Swift's 1989 tour. Perhaps Terror Amor borrowed her time machine.

Avatar 1:15am
Bad Giblet Zero:

@andrew: I spent most of last decade working a third shift job. I had a difficult time adjusting back to a "regular" daytime schedule. It's been six years since I worked third shift and I still lean towards a much later schedule. I generally go to bed sometime between 6am and 9am and sleep until between 1pm and 4pm.

I used to have a "Best of 'Cutting Edge'" laserdisc comprised of segments from the Peter Zaremba-hosted MTV show that was a precursor to "120 Minutes." There was a segment with Jonathan Richman in which he talks about his least favorite crowds to perform for. I can probably still quote it verbatim and act out his mannerisms.
  1:19am
rw:

I tried to play that interview for my daughter who's a fan of JR. MS's discomfort made her so uncomfortable herself that she couldn't listen.
Funny, because the week before his interview was 180 degrees in the opposite direction.

Bad Giblet Zero:

I wish Todd-o-phonic had named his show "Todd-o-phonic Todd Fills In For Todd-o-phonic Todd."
  1:21am
JakeGould:

FWIW, I just shifted from a 9-to-5 gig that had me sitting in a fluorescent light filled “cave” filled with computers to a “work my own time but work for us” freelance gig and it’s an odd transition. Waking up in “the office” can be disconcerting. So I force myself to get outside even more than when I was 9-to-5. NEED THAT SUNLIGHT!

JakeGould:

Avatar 1:26am
Bad Giblet Zero:

The title of that compilation sounds like a Numero Group release.
Avatar 1:29am
-andrew-:

Yeah, that's the worst part of my schedule, JakeGould. During the winter months, I don't see the sun except when I drive home from work because I go to bed right when I get home and by the time I wake up at 5-ish, the sun is already going down. So, I switch to a normal daylight schedule for my weekends, then switch back when my work week starts.

Dan in Portland OR:

Hi Therese and everyone listening and those on third shift out there tonight! (Formerly Dan in Milwaukee, formerly third shift)
  1:38am
rw:

Andrew that sounds grueling. Working off hours sounds pretty appealing though. Jake working from home is tough. Sounds like you've got yourself a fairly disciplined schedule though. My job is half on location half at home. I find myself procrastinating when home and then working until late. Especially Sunday. Like... now.
Avatar 1:42am
-andrew-:

rw, the upside to working overnights is seeing my wife and kid a lot more than I did working second shift. So, I consider that an even trade.

That and my job is super laid back and I can listen to WFMU while on the clock, so I'll take it.
  1:43am
JakeGould:

RW, I have it somewhat disciplined. I used to freelance for about 10 years. Then 9-to-5 for 3 years. And now back to freelancing as of the last few weeks. This was my choice because it works better for me. Slight hit in pay, but better overall life from this new setup. I do not miss commuting or sitting in a dark office dealing with bureaucractic B.S. And now I know how to discipline my schedule and structure my clients better.
  1:45am
JakeGould:

Andrew, whatever works is what works.
Avatar 1:45am
Bad Giblet Zero:

My company got an actual office a couple of years ago and I tried going in. It didn't work so well. I get super focused on whatever I'm doing and there were too many distractions being in an office. At home I have control over what's happening around me. I listen to WFMU or have old movies on in the background most of the time. I'm sure working from home like this isn't for everyone, but it works for me.
Avatar 1:48am
Bad Giblet Zero:

When I worked third shift the biggest issue I had was something waking me up in the afternoon and then not being able to get back to sleep. I'd lay in bed willing myself to fall asleep and it just wouldn't take. Usually about thirty minutes before I would have to wake up and get ready is when I'd start getting sleepy again.

I started taking over-the-counter sleeping pills. I was hesitant to do it because I feared they would knock me out to the point that I would sleep through my alarm. Not the case at all. Things still woke me up, but I was able to fall right back asleep. The pills I took were made by Tylenol. They contained whatever sleep-inducing ingredient that's in Tylenol PM.

I had the same problem BGZ. I started taking a Melatonin supplement and it usually does the trick. It's more gradual, but it keeps me asleep, as long as I limit my caffeine intake. That and sleeping with an eye mask and ear plugs.
Avatar 1:52am
-andrew-:

Therese, I hope all this sleep talk isn't making you tired.
  1:53am

Melatonin is actually good and cheap. You should try that BGZ.
Avatar 1:54am
Bad Giblet Zero:

I always put a DVD I'd watched hundred of times on repeat. It provided some level of constant noise so that the hustle and bustle of whatever was happening outside didn't wake me up. It had to be something I'd seen a bunch of times so that I didn't get wrapped up in wondering what would happen next. I just had to make sure it wasn't a MGM DVD. The MGM Home Video lion that pops up post-movie is LOUD!
Avatar 1:57am
-andrew-:

Ha! Yeah that would be a terrifying sound to suddenly wake you up.
  1:57am
rw:

Therese, just say it. You can't relate and we're kind of boring.
Avatar 1:58am
Therese:

No! That's not true at all, RW!
  1:59am

I can’t go to sleep to TV or anything visual anymore. I use dot do that and it really created some stress dreams. Like I am having my dream and then suddenly… Some action scene from “Beverly Hills Cop” comes on and it ruins it…

Lonely Cowgirl song is on Light in the Attic. My friend Charlie has the Light in the Attic subscription. I think it's an annual gift from his wife. I used to subscribe to a thing called Turntable Kitchen. Each month they'd send a box with a 7-inch single, three or four recipe cards and some organically grown/produced ingredients that could be used to make one or more of the recipes. There was also a download for a compilation of tunes to listen to while making and enjoying a meal. It was in the $25-$30 range. I have no idea if the price is still the same. I canceled because the artists on the records included in the box were mostly not my thing.
