Violent Femmes fans out there? Phil Gelb just announced a performance in his Oakland loft by Brian Ritchie on shakuhachi: http://philipgelb.blogspot.com/2014/09/brian-tairaku-ritchie-dinnerconcert.html
My daughter's youth symphony will be playing Carnegie Hall next June!
12:06pm
Dean:
See Phil Gelb reference above. I've heard David Murray, Mark Dresser, Oliver Lake, and Joelle Leandre in Phil's living room. (Not together, four shows.)
Saw Evan with Joe Morris and Stephen Haynes at Real Art Ways in Hartford on Saturday night in a nice space with a good-sized attentive audience. Two sets of full-on excellence. Heartwarming!
I liked how the long-departed SPY magazine actually went onto the streets of NYC to see how many folks answered w/ the usual gag or actually gave directions.
My idea of humor: I was once across the street from Carnegie Hall with some friends from out of town. I asked them if they knew how to get there, and before they could answer, quickly added: "It's right across the street!"
Nope! Funny you should mention it, though -- my dog has been yapping unceasingly at the refrigerator guys.

Do keep an eye on Phil's calendar. He hosts terrific shows, and his cooking is *well worth* the price. It's BYOB, and inevitably attendees share splashes of wine w/ each other. Nothing cooler than asking David Murray if he'd like to try the Burgundy.
JLA is one of four musicians featured in a movie by a buddy of mine. See the trailer to Steve Elkins' "Reach of Resonance." http://vimeo.com/ondemand/resonance
Cool; thanks, Dean! Will check that post-show. Is it on DVD, or out now on big screens?
1:43pm
Dean:
He toured it around the world during the year or two after its release, winning awards and acclaim. I don't think it screens anywhere now, but you can rent or buy. The story of the making of the movie is itself a topic for a documentary! The Miya Masaoka interview was conducted in my apartment at the time.
@pss
Tony is off this week. He will probably come back with Tape Hiss next Tuesday.

'A listener from the future' here. Great work as always, but I particularly enjoyed the set you played from the new bin. Your discussion and commentary even seemed livelier and more engaging. By all means keep digging through the history but know you d excellent work on the here and now!
