Back to MAD: for his book review work, Philo was sent 3 beautiful coffee table books gratis. There are two in the MAD's Greatest Artist series "Mort Drucker: Five Decades of His Finest Work" (oddly w/a foreword by Michael J. Fox) and "Sergio Aragonés: Five Decades of His Finest Work," along with "The Art of Harvey Kurtz: The Mad Genius of Comics." Great reminiscences, esp. w/ Drucker's stuff.

And don't get me started on Wally Wood, a bona fide genius if there ever was one. Had trouble in the 70's earning a living on what they were paying artists, despite staying up all night, working days at a time... Dr. told him his eyesight was going, he'd have trouble drawing eventually; came home and shot himself.

@P-90: Well, since I'm older than the hills, I had given up reading MAD before the '70s even hit. It was definitely a middle-school indulgence for me. Another influence on me -- esp. w/ homophonic punning and wordplay -- was Rocky and Bullwinkle.

@fxo: I don't know if you remember, Al Capp's name came up on the board here a month or two ago...? It's worth noting that a LOT of these MAD artists (and others) passed through his studio as apprentices, honing their craft by drawing and inking Abner, Daisy Mae, and the gang for the newspapers.

Multiple layers of communication going on in MAD, Rocky and Bulwinkle and those other Jay Ward cartoons, so a wide appeal to kids at various levels of development. I thought I was getting all the inside jokes. Much later, I knew differently.

I'd gone on and on praising the program and how cartoons for kids today aren't up to snuff. Have to admit we've not made it all the way through the collection quite yet. Still some bits to make me smile, but not the ear-to-ear I remember as a kid.

@Philo: To me, Kurtzman totally exemplifies that early-mid sixties comedy style, very smart and irreverent, along with Jay Ward and his cronies, Stan Freberg, Vaughn Meador who did the "First Family" comedy albums, and Bob Clampett in his post-Warners "Beany and Cecil" days. Jim Henson and Frank Oz were true products of that generation, too. Ivy-league beatnik types...

@Kat I've always disliked reality in comics and cartoons! Which is why I never got interested in superhero comics, while still enjoying the Franco-Belgian 'bigfoot' style comics, talking animals and assorted craziness.

Crusader and his pal Rags are the direct forerunners of Rocky and Bulwinkle. The style of humor is already there in embryonic form, and if you look at those episodes now, you can see how they were struggling to solve the then-new problem of producing animation cheaply enough for TV budgets. Of course Hannah-Barbera were working on the same problem...but that's another story.
