Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from May 2, 2014 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Funny thing Uncle, we went down to the National Jazz & Blues Festival in 1969 two weeks before Woodstock. The Who were prepping Tommy, stunning set. On the way down the chain on my BSA 650 sidecar BROKE. So that song always hits home.

In those days folks were friendly, got a lift to the nearest bike shop, got a chain. Then knocked on a door of a nearby house and the man there lent me spanners (wrenches) to remove the wheel and fix it. Still got to the gig in time for the evening show. Same day that Sharon Tate was murdered. Some things you do not forget.

Can one say "Shag off" or "Shag that, I'm outta here!"?
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
Brian in UK:

Shagged, also refers to being knackered (frightfully tired).
Uncle, am I remembering correctly that Wow has a track that you had to change the speed to 78rpm with Lou Waxman. Memory might be playing tricks here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
Parq:

Sigh. Somehow this Soul Surv track never sounds right without a 60s Nippon transistor radio tuned to an AM station, with the leatherette case with holes over the speaker grill.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
Brian in UK:

You cannot really use shag in the same sense as f**k though it refers to the same act.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
Parq:

Interestingly, Brian (or maybe not, but what the hey), in South Carolina, shagging refers to dancing, specifically to a particular sub-genre of soul known as Beach Music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
Uncle Michael:

I hear that, Parq.
Avatar 12:57pm
earrie:

I think of the knackered 'shagged' as being like the exhausted/wiped out connotation of 'spent'.

I was taken aback when I first saw that WFMU had a DJ called Dave the Spazz. Over here Spazz is short for Spastic, a derogatory term. Well one that Ian Dury tried to change.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Uncle Michael:

It's a little incorrect over here too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
Parq:

Brian, it's a derogatory term in the US too, usually used to insult someone with poor coordination. I'm pretty sure Dave's use of it is ironic.

In my case, it was not as if there was anything I can do to get people to stop calling me that, so eventually I just answered to "Spazz" or "Spazmo".

During the late '70s L.A. punk scene there was a character, Spaz Attack, depicted here with other luminaries: http://alicebag.blogspot.com/2008/02/women-in-la-punk-part-xxv-connie.html (OT: KK of the Screamers is now an Academy Award nominee for his film design work.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Dave the Spazz is using "spazz" to mean exactly that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm
