Listener comments!
6:03am : our day begins. How's bayou?6:03am : ! Good morning (o:6:17am : hi fxo and all. this is the right humor for my monday morning.6:21am : hello X Key & bibi. It's morning, here in Jersey City. All is (s)well.6:32am : this is probably the first mogwai tune i genuinely enjoy since the happy songs lp...6:33am : There was still water in the mug I just poured my coffee into.
DAMMIT!6:33am : Hope you're having a better morning.6:34am : @hu, do you call it 'socket juice' in english ?6:36am : Socket juice: excellent! Hiya, Frank. Good morning, and hello all.6:37am : Good day fxo. We need some ice creams over here and some Love!!!6:38am : Being Dutch, I don't know, but that is a great term, Bibi!
I'm glad I couldn't find 'socket juice' on urbandictionary.6:39am : Good Morning fxo and all6:39am : un jus de chaussette is the regular drink on french construction sites in the morning.
la Kro for the afternoon... (i let you google)6:39am : hallo to Hark, Sem, and UK Brian.6:40am : I'm having a latte graciously made for me this morning. And the sun is shining on the daffodils. G'mo everyone.6:41am : and goob morning, P-90 and left6:41am : sock juice - does that mean using a sock as a coffee filter?!6:41am : Hey Frank!
Jus de chaussette would literally be sock juice, right?
La Kro is... Kronenbourg, the beer?6:44am : Un jus de chaussette is cheap, crappy coffee, tasteless and weak. Not sue about "La Kro"6:45am : "Not SURE" - not Sue either, but who's counting6:47am : yes, la kro is the regular cheap neutral beer in france.
sorry for my poor translation, sock juice.
socket juice is way more dangerous, but tastier.6:49am : Yes, if it's "electrical socket juice" it migh tbe dangerous6:50am : Good morning. Where can I get some of this socket juice. I could use some this morning.6:51am : I'll use it on girls, when I put on my fake french accent.
"Doo not drink zis disgoosting crepe! Zis jus de chaussette! Let me make yoo some real café!"6:51am : I suck at this.6:51am : Isn't "sockette" a little sock, en francais?6:52am : Good morning Frank!
Guten TZAG everyone!6:53am : Ciao Guido!6:53am : Anyway. Frank, thanks for playing this particular track. It's not just beautiful, it's dedicated to the province in the Netherlands where I grew up. The man reading is a famous Dutch comedian.6:53am : @sem, une soquette, right, thus my mistake.6:55am : duke, and Guido, we're here wit' you. Thanks for the info Hark.6:56am : Michiel Romeyn, that comedian, was part of a comedy trio who made Jiskefet, an absurd comedy show that ran for about 25 years until a couple of years ago.
Obviously most sketches involve a lot of spoken Dutch, but I can find a few things that don't require you to learn the language...6:59am : Here you go...

Cream man: www.youtube.com...
Kraftwerk: www.youtube.com...7:02am : Sorry for hijacking the comments section!7:03am : @hu, i never really understood music in netherlands.
in regular music discussions, i cannot name more than solex and de heideroosjes (excluding of course the infinite list of cheesy tech producers).
well, i never understood much about netherlands, except architecture and speed skating.7:06am : Hijacking? I beg to differ.7:07am : btw, the trainman scene is wonderful and incarnates wonderfully my ununderstanding.7:08am : I don't know much more than you to be honest. There's the Ex of course. Some one hit wonders, like George Baker, Golden Earring and the Pussycats, and some more decent, but often sentimental stuff from the 60s and 70s, like Ramses Shaffy and Boudewijn de Groot.
Here's a 'classic': www.youtube.com...
Famous 60s protest song: www.youtube.com...7:10am : Has it been an hour already? "Time flies when you're having fun" --and especially when you're half asleep and having fun7:13am : @Hark: In America, Golden Earring are more like 3.5 hit wonders7:13am : In the last 15 years, the best artist by some distance is Spinvis, who is shamefully ignored on WFMU... though I'm trying hard to get him played. One day soon...

www.youtube.com...7:14am : speaking of weak, tasteless coffee: 'mare piss' in belgian dutch7:14am : amazing language you got, hu.7:14am : good morning all7:14am : Oh, and Focus of course... whose Hocus Pocus AmEdeo always plays. They're Dutch too. The guitarist of Focus is known to be an extremely arrogant prick.7:15am : I'm sure I've heard Spinvis once or twice on "The Fun 91", no?7:16am : @luca, why dont you say flemish ? are you shy because a real dutch is in here ? ;)7:17am : @bibi: ah, stirring the pot, I sense.7:17am : strictly speaking, flemish is only the western variant of belgian dutch bibi ;)...the eastern ones being brabantish and limburgish...but in french, indeed, it's all 'flamand'7:18am : Jan Akkerman maintains his reputation as "an arrogant prick" even though he's still coasting on a couple of hits from 1970? Pretty good...7:19am : @fxo: LOVE this "Where is the Love?"7:20am : @P-90: I can't find him in the artist browser.
Flemish Dutch, I consider it a dialect. I kind of speak it. Brabants, Limburgish Dutch don't sound nearly as good.
More interesting music came from Flanders than the Netherlands in the last 30 years actually.
Here's another kind of recent Dutch hit I forgot about:
www.youtube.com...7:20am : gotta get back to work now...7:20am : backatcha Jeroen.7:21am : @Hark: this ISN'T your work?7:22am : @sem, fxo begged to differ, so i execute.
@luca, of course im kidding, and i do agree with hu, so much more interesting music comes from belgium (at least artists i know about).7:23am : herman brood ain't that bad either...aha, zeelandic hark ;)7:23am : Re: language variants. Once saw a France 2 documentary about French-speaking aboriginal healers from Northern Quebec. The healers were speaking Quebec French, but France 2 provided subtitles, in "real" French.7:24am : Zeeuws, luca, Zeeuws.7:24am : @Hark:
Jan Akkerman = Focus guitarist, no?
Ohhhh...I see he's been out of the band since 1990. I had the wrong arrogant prick, who exactly is the current prick you referred to?7:25am : @hark: i know...thought zeelandic was the english term en.wikipedia.org...7:25am : @sem, yep, real deep quebecians are ununderstandable to regular metropolitans like me. more an accent problem than vocabulary one. you live in france or did ?7:26am : @P-90: No idea. Jan Akkerman is famous for being a prick. I had no idea Focus existed beyond the 70s.
@luca: what do those english know? :P7:29am : i'll stir the pot again, maybe that's why luca said belgian dutch and not flemish...7:29am : @bibi:My father is from Normandy, so heard THAT kind of French at home and the Quebec version on radio/TV/at school in Canada.7:30am : @sem, so you are an english canadian (unlike belgian dutch) with a portuguese pseudo ?7:32am : Just so.7:34am : @Hark:
OK it was Spinvis you couldn't find, not Jan Akkerman, who therefore IS still apparently an arrogant prick, even though coasting on a couple of hits from 1970, with a band he hasn't played with for 23 years
Got confused there...funny you're a native and didn't know Focus has reformed a few times, shows how unimportant they've been without the arrogant prick, I guess7:34am : @bibi: bit logical…viewed from across the channel, it’s all the same language, dutch….just like the french call german ‘allemand’ (= all men btw), even though that’s just the name for one dialect, spoken in the southwest of germany….pars pro toto7:35am : ..I'm more coherent AFTER coffee, getting some right now...7:37am : @P-90: That's right. Sorry for the confusion! Focus was never big, as far as I know. Not Golden Earring big in any case. Akkerman just considers himself the greatest guitarist in the history of.. well, the universe I guess?
Another cup of coffee would be great. Yes! This time without water in my cup.7:38am : Stellar set, fxo. This Pirate Jenny thing is pure sorcery.7:40am : @fxo: yes, Pirate Jenny was quite magical7:42am : @sem, i feel so tasteless now, like a sock juice, i ll look for an indonesian pseudo.
@luca, yes, meanings differ when crossing borders, shifting language, if it wanst that early i would pompously say 'empiric metonymies'. yet flemish is flemish. btw they say deutsch, i say allemand, most here say german, any idea why italians say tedescho ?7:44am : yeahhh7:44am : @bibi: how about this: tanpa timbal.7:46am : Afternoon7:47am : MY COLLEGE PROFESSOR APRIL BERNARD WROTE THE BOOK "PIRATE JENNY"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!7:48am : wow, thank you world leading search engine for helping me. nice one sem.
is there a patent i must pay for ?
im pretty sure many consonants happen in the dutch version7:48am : Originally, where Germany is now, there were many small nation-states (like in Italy) and the educated, formal language was Latin, but the common language was called "Theodisce"
So: This was "La lingua Tedesca" to the Italians7:50am : hey Mauri, welcome to our club.7:50am : @P-90: thanks for the research, I had wondered about that:)7:51am : Yeah, me too P-90. Thanks!7:54am : Various pronunciations of "Theodisce" were also the origins of "Deutsch" in German7:57am : Thanks Frank. Hows tricks? So many birds came back here already. Saw a swan couple this morning too.7:59am : @mauri: hyvaa huomenta!
Swans are returning in pairs to Central Park in New York also. Ah, Spring...8:00am : wow, very interesting, even more considering theodisce sounds more greek than roman. this will never end.8:02am : ...or it will end somewhere in the rift valley.8:03am : Hey P-90 ! spring indeed! Tomorrow I go to record a friends band for 10 days. That'll be fun. Haven't left this shore for months.
Nice gurgling Fgrank!8:03am : Morning, FXO and FXOers8:04am : @mauri, at least you got a shore... my life is desperately continental.8:05am : Everyone who learns Italian wants to know where the Hell "tedesco" comes from, it seems so far from "German" in any other familiar language.
Tedesco is also a surname in Italy, presumably once adopted by those of German descent.8:07am : @bibi: "Desperately Continental" sounds like it could be the name of a song from a Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers musical film from the 1930's8:07am : hello from all of us, doca.8:08am : Good Morning, doca8:08am : now we know it's deutsch coming from tedescho...
before seeing it on the list, i thought this was some kind of 70s original version i didnt know about and felt miserable. this is probably my fave qotsa tune, and this cover is good. thx fxo.8:09am : @bibi Jeah I sure like waking up to see the ice melting and moving about, trees around me and birds singing. But I'm going to move at some point.8:10am : @p90, yeah, it would be ternary. quite fast pace, lots of brass.8:10am : @mauri: so no more morning skiing?8:10am : @mauri, are you that north ? like oulu or something ?8:12am : Morning, P-90.8:12am : @bibi, no, I'm in southeast. Between the largest lake and Russian border.8:14am : like close to viipuri ? there's ice down there. remember helsinki in march (i think), no ice floating around in the sea...8:14am : Aaaaaaaaahahhhahahahahahahaha!
I'M DONE WORKING!8:17am : Nas and Damien are possessed.8:17am : I was in Finland once. We noticed that nobody said a single word the entire train ride from Helsinki to Tampere. But then in the evening, when some alcohol was consumed...8:17am : @fxo: great playlist, sorry if the quality of the music's been neglected on Comments.
Gang Starr reminded me that the AM web-only shows aren't subject to FCC regs......ha!8:18am : good morn everyone!8:19am : Ahoy common!8:19am : @bibi in joutseno. Never been to Russia.
@P-90 thats often the case.8:20am : heheh I meant
@HarktheUmpire, that's often the case!8:20am : the discourse is working well, IMHO.
yes, good morning, common.8:21am : @hu, yep, all the same, some really good memories once finnish girls drink ! the obvious contrast in night & day experiences made it very emotional for me, i remeber it like being in a tragicomedy movie (sorry for the cheesy comparison but it is).8:25am : @bibi:"Once Finnish Girls Drink" = '60's exploitation movie title.8:26am : @bibi: I think I know what you mean, I found Kaurismäki's films portray Finland pretty accurately.8:28am : this rap quart d'heure was delicious btw.
@sem, a low budget sequel to "à nous les petites anglaises".8:36am : @sem: ad campaign slogan: "Once Finnish Girls Drink, can mayhem and hilarity be far behind?"8:40am : @P-90: you were born to write movie posters!8:41am : OK, this Mr. Sandman thing is far-freakin-out8:42am : Hey @fxo: is that all there is of "Sandman"?8:45am : mayhem & hilarity are only by-products, P90, indeed it makes it an even better teaser....8:46am : P-90: it was part of a loop that I put together, way back when.8:47am : @Frank
What is your favoured audio-mixing software.
'm still stuck with ol'-fashioned Cubase/Wavelab on my old system.8:49am : @Frank: another successful Exciting Moments salon this morning. Really dug the music and talk. See you and everyone next time.8:50am : time is getting late. Thanks for the great conversation(s), between alla yez. Have a nice week. I'll be back, with a new webcast, next week (Monday, and later, in the FMU archives).
Enjoy yourselves.
Peace ...8:52am : Thanks for a great set, Frank!8:52am : Thanks, Mr. O'Toole!
btw: what IS your favorite editing software???8:53am : the groove of this groove is oddly close to a lindstroem tune. guitar might be the same source.
fxo, please reply guido's question, i want to know too !
otherwise brilliant set.8:55am : Guido, I'll never tell. Things are put together, as time DOES fly!8:57am : so: tight-lipped, ay? nyuk nyuk nyuk8:57am : thanks fxo8:58am : Allrighty ... thanx 4 the exiting and pleasant mixes Frank!9:01am : Hi...and bye!
