	9:13pm Danne D: Supposedly I was telling my sister everything that happened on "Watergate" every day when she came home from school. I am not kidding. Though I remember none of that. That year is pretty much pre-memory, though I do remember I was a big fan of Flip Wilson's show around then.

	9:14pm Whooda: @sevel Yes, exactly the same for me. With hindsight I can see why I was so confused and overwhelmed by the era in musical terms. Who's That Lady is an excellent example of stuffing my brain with new and fantastic sound and genre but not understanding how.

	9:15pm Stevel: ...and, if anyone would like to know, it was the year after my family relocated, with me heading into 6th grade. I wasn't happy. A new friend of bad influence (the other kids weren't really that approachable) introduced me to Alice Cooper, via the Billion Dollar Babies collector cards. I had no idea what the fuck it was, but it was FASCINATING! That was the moment I graduated from top 40 radio to listening to and buying albums. AOR came soon after.

	9:16pm Danne D: @EFD and Joe apparently it became of hit again in '73 because it had been banned in '62 in Britain for being too morbid. 1973 it was re-released there and a hit. England is always good for the random charting song now and again :) @Holly Oh I get that have Tales played on WFMU is a once in a lifetime opportunity (that has already happened for me) - it just happens to be the album they released in '73.

	9:17pm Joe B: I'll always remember 1973 as my first experience getting ripped off in music. I mailed away for a record called Golden Hits of 1973. 2 Lp set featuring the top hits of the year ... performed by a group called 'the Sound Effects'

	9:18pm Danne D: I was 3 when Watergate was on. I can only surmise that I watched the Electric Company and it was on after and for some oddball reason I had my mom keep it on. I apprarently gave a daily update of the dress the one witness was wearing that day.

	9:20pm john: I was ten in '73. Half my fifth grade class--and probably half of every other one too, at least the boys--owned the single of Monster Mash. There's yer hit. And in retrospect, I'd suggest that the '60s were long dead by then.

	9:25pm Danne D: Flip Wilson very well might be my first memory. I distinctly remember watching it when it was on and I really can't think of anything else. More likely it's a 1974 memory for me. It's more amazing perhaps in the sense that dad, um, kinda would make us turn off the Jeffersons... Funny thing is that Wacky Packs are an underrated cultural phenomenon. Largely because of Garbage Pail Kids (which were essentially Wacky Packs concepts attached to the Cabbage Patch craze)

I knew things were changing for the worse when, around 1990, I heard a muzak version of Don't Fear the Reaper in a supermarket.

	10:15pm john: School's Out swept through North Street School the year before (at least the big kids in fifth and sixth grade), opening the door wide for Billion Dollar Babies, which one girl brought to play in art class that spring. All the more exciting because it had been recorded in the house the band was living in only about a mile away from our school.
	10:15pm patro: I saw Alice Cooper on this tour, I think, I was 15 or 16 at the time. Flo & Eddie were the opener. Alice got his head cut off for a grand finale.

Funny we 10 yr olds didn't find that odd (hey, he gave us quarters for the jukebox!), and luckily he wasn't a pedo, at least not actively. Sigh, Jukebox at the beach. Beach free, jukebox a quarter. Kids these days will never know. Also Good Humor Cherry Bombes, Bomb Pops, and that thing with the gumball at the bottom.

I've got a story or two about the house, and local high schoolers a few years older than I have more--apparently the guys were mostly well-liked by anyone who knew them around town. Scads of wholly imaginary tales have cropped up over the years, including some that people I know swear are true but which bear no possible relation to objective reality. Factoid: Bette Davis was apparently a near neighbor, in her elderly drunk years. She may have been somewhat less popular.

	10:27pm JakeGould: @Holly, I have a similar memory. I grew up in Brooklyn 1 block away from the Brighton Beach boardwalk & the sea. Yeah, its as junky & gross, but still magical. Also, 30 year old hanging with 10 year olds… Well, there was this one acid casualty in the neighborhood. Name was Bill. Had to be late 20s. Big Jewfro. Anyway, my mom would make him cheese sandwiches & give him cans of juice. The deal? He stood watch over the neighborhood kids playing & if someone came near us he’s start screaming at them. Fucking magic!

	10:30pm jes: Although I gather I'm about the same age as EFD (and many other commenters here), and I am enjoying the interview segments, the all '73 playlist doesn't invoke pleasant nostalgia for me. Rather, it reminds me of how much I hated bands like this, and how bad the radio of that era was, until punk finally broke through.

Cleansed of the 1960s cultural jetsam, rock and pop are reborn in ravishing new duds: glam, prog, protopunk, metal, you name it -- the gang is suddenly all here, at the top of their game, hurling hits like fastballs.

That's a paragraph from the introduction of What You Want Is In The Limo by Michael Walker. He's my guest on tonight's show, and we'll be discussing the simultaneous '73 tours of Led Zeppelin, The Who and Alice Cooper that were the catalysts for the sea change in rock tours, the rock business and rock stardom. A new friend of bad influence (the other kids weren't really that approachable) introduced me to Alice Cooper, via the Billion Dollar Babies collector cards. I had no idea what the fuck it was, but it was FASCINATING! That was the moment I graduated from top 40 radio to listening to and buying albums. AOR came soon after.
