Live performance by Barbez (Dan Kaufman: electric guitar; Peter Hess: clarinet; Catherine McRae: violin; Peter Lettre: bass; John Bollinger: drums)

The European-bohemian-inspired avant-rock ensemble, Barbez, continues to explore their musical Jewish heritage on a new album, "Bella Ciao." Conjuring a more Italian theme, the album was inspired by bandleader Dan Kaufman's meeting with composer Yotam Haber. Yotam introduced him to the mysterious, beguiling music of the Roman Jewish community, the oldest continuously living in that ancient city, which has been passed down mostly through oral tradition. Kaufman says "Bella Ciao"'s title track, probably the most famous artifact of the Italian Resistance, is central to the album's theme. Barbez gives the music their unique spin and dropped by WFMU to play some of it live.

whats the story behind those bullet holes?
  Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
12539:

The Flickr caption says, "Opposite Hotel de Peiris. In 1944 partisans in Rome bombed and shot at an armed column of 156 German SS police in Via Rasella in Rome. 31 nazi soldiers and two civilians died in the attack. The German SS retaliated within 24 h and collected and killed 335 innocent citizens (Fosse Ardeatine)."

I missed the first half hour of Irene's show waaaah!!! Damn interweb, I wish I had a radio that could receive the propagated tones and tunes of WFMU. But Seattle has yet to get street lighting. Maybe next year. Love coming into some Frisell.

Whew, first moment I've had to join the comments! Glad you liked Barbez. They had to start earlier so bassist Peter could get back to work, so I had to do a bit of rushing around to set them up. Barbez has many wonderful albums to their credit (www.barbez.com). Check out their previous live set on WFMU: wfmu.org...
