Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from August 16, 2013 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
Uncle Michael:

Bo sure can fling the bullshit.
  1:19pm
Robert:

Aw, darn, just looked at the playlist now. I was hoping to learn the Schaefer beer jingle was originally something with a previous name & different lyrics that they just adapted to a jingle. Kind of like when I heard "Drink Me" announced as the source of the Mr. Softee jingle, and assumed it was an old European folk tune, only to learn the next time it was played that that was the band name playing Songs For Ice Cream Trucks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
pacific standard simon:

Now here's a musical marriage that should've lasted longer. Imagine Bo with TWO maraca players! Bo probably hated Phil's bass style, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm
Uncle Michael:

Phil sounds great on this!

That wasn't Schaeffer, Robert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Uncle Michael:

I can't plug existing, fantasy advertisers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Uncle Michael:

That's why I can't tell you that was the Schlitz jingle.

Oops.
  1:24pm
Robert:

Darn, you're right, I meant to write "Schlitz".

Then there was the time on WQXR the DJ (wasn't Steve Post) announced cuts from a record as being of Baroque tunes, causing the audience to marvel at how old the originals to tunes like "Erie Canal" were before he finally revealed the hoax, explaining that it was arrangements of more recent stuff in Baroque, etc. style.
  1:24pm
Robert:

Come to think of it, it wouldn't even scan right if it was "When you're out of Schaefer....:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
Uncle Michael:

"When your down to Schlitz, you're out of beer."
  1:26pm
Robert:

And then there was the time I played my grandparents' Yugoslav records for company, only to learn from my friends that one cut was "Buffalo Gals" in Croatian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
pacific standard simon:

I don't disagree with your appreciation of Phil Lesh's playing, but sometimes these old R'n'B guys can have a problem with the modern bass styles with lots of fiddly bits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
Alex In Illinois:

Schlitz is long gone, right? The last few times I have had to drive North of the Chedder Curtain to the Milkaukee area, I have seen that what was once the Schlitz brewery is either gone, or something else.

Does anyone remember the Schlitz Malt Liquor ad with Rufus Thomas? Hey! I found it onYoutube:
www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Uncle Michael:

Schlitz is owned by Miller now and has revived "Classic 1960's Formula" which is really pretty good slamming beer and what I'm having right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
pacific standard simon:

"From the land of sky-blue waters,
Comes the beer refreshing..."

Hamms? I forget.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm

Yes, I know that ad well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm

hamms is still terrible.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm
listener james from westwood:

loved the lovecraft!
iirc i first heard this VU track in freshman year of college, courtesy of a stone VU freak. used to claim everything past the mid-60s was inspired by the band or lou reed. i later tricked him into buying metal machine music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
listener james from westwood:

"suddenly rough hands gripped his package" meant something very different in those days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
Uncle Michael:

There's a great live version of the Drifter that I should play one day. Lovecraft was pretty great. Dual lead vocalists...not two...dual. Unusual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
Jeff Golick:

IIRC, this VU cut has the vocals and music in two entirely different channels, so that if you pan to one side or the other, you can isolate either the words or the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm
pacific standard simon:

Why do I get the feeling that this is a recycled manuscript from Lou Reed's college years, and that he got an A- on it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm
Uncle Michael:

it's true
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm
pacific standard simon:

It's true, Jeff. I had a stereo with a broken channel.

Are they a very small operation?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
listener james from westwood:

that's weird, simon, the first thing sierra nevada did when they were just starting up was to make sales calls to local package stores and bars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm
pacific standard simon:

Now with Parks, money sometimes is the only answer to your problems. As far as I can tell, the only way for me to get a replacement for JUMP is to buy a very expensive collector's copy, or a digital copy from Amazon.

How do you buy the beer if it is not in the grocery store? Does the microbrewery let you bring your own container, and fill that up each time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm
Alex In Illinois:

So you are in Washington State. I recall a few weeks ago you mentioned picking up rotten apples, when the apples here in Illinios were not even ripe or full size yet. I wondered where you were that had the apples already rotten.
