What's this about tubes not being environmentally safe? They're just glass and metal -- way less toxic and easier to recycle than any transistor.

The only countries producing vacuum tubes today are Russia, China, and Japan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Makes sense Droll!
- This is what I've always heard. Urban myth? A tube is more 'mechanical' to produce? Otherwise, labor cost is the reason?
- Tubes distort in the right way: they are a little fire. Only Guitarists want them - & a few Audiophiles (add 'warmth' to digital signals).
- Another thing commonly accepted: tubes accent even harmonics, & solid state the odd ones...All maybe a bit Spinal Tap for the Board here?...
Avatar 10:41pm
Droll:

RRN, It's all about power, portability, and convenience: tubes cannot run on battery power or fit in a cell phone.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yeah - they need a lot of maintenance - like a noisy Harley that only works when it's straining; some guitarists use digital amps for reliability - w/ a box w/ *one tube* for the warmth...One recording artist told me that if he records w/ analog tape, he doesn't need to worry about 'adding warmth' later!...

- Well - as I see it - digital has *all* the advantages (clarity, compressible, programmable) - except this: Instead of representing the Soundwave analogously (analog) - it Samples it - taking Sections of it & converting it into numbers (digits-digital):
- You don't get a curvy soundwave, but a jagged thing w/ edges. The detail of the edges will depend on your Sampling Rate.
- Another problem w/ digital is the changing Formats, of course. Every medium has its' own qualities, in the end...

The difference between analog and digital is that when analog is overdriven it bends, when digital is overdriven it breaks. If you're listening to a MP3 or CD, tubes don't matter, but if you're plugging your guitar straight into it or summing 48 tracks, tubes make all the difference in the world.

@Droll I know I was just goofin' :) Terre has played a little prog once in a while - sometimes when I've turned up on her comments page ;)

Screaming Blue Messiahs! One of my favorite '80s bands. But not the Flinstones song.

I would have gone with The English Horseface

I never heard of 16 RPM recording before! How great it's Poe...Digital great for pitch control - but Backwards, the obligatory Psych effect - tape for that...

I certainly can't goof on EFD about fantasy baseball as my team is suckin' - it zoomed all the way up to 8th place tonight

So... there must be a Horseface US, right?
Avatar 11:41pm

At least Belock finally made a transaction. It was kinda embarrassing having him kick all our asses w/o even changing his roster once. He's still in 1st though. EFD is running in 4th currently.

Simultaneously following a very ugly Giants/Diamondbacks game. Brandon Crawford is this year's model.

Anybody hear Irwin's comment this afternoon:
"My cat came out of the closet today."

Irwin's a shit-stirrer, and I don't think he has a problem with that.

Irwin? That quiet guy who keeps his opinions to himself? I can't imagine he'd instigate anything. Is he really still on air? I thought they just gave that old coot a hairbrush to talk into for three hours.

Great show, Evan!

He saw a camera and came out to pose on my shoulder. And then back in the closet again. Seriously, he can monitor all the comings and goings from a cushy spot right next to the toilet paper inventory. Hisses if you open the door on him.

...The Polls all show that younger people - Aquarian Age Knowledge people - all acknowledge that people are born w/ their sexual preferences
- & all the older people of the Piscean Age - the age of Belief & Religion don't acknowledge it.
