I heard Fabio say that puns are the *lowest form of humor* -- ha! I say to that and bite my thumb at he! That's only true for people not adept at 2nd and 3rd level punning. ;)

the lowest form of humor is slipping on a banana peel...because the banana peel is on the ground

It's the lowness of their humor formliness, that makes them so incredibly funny.

Devin_Gristlemancer:

More people need to have names like "Pip" and "Arlo". Where have all the Arlo's gone?
Avatar 7:12pm
Honey_U_Kettlewater:

Punny thing is, I've noticed an upsurge of homophonic puns in the late night talk show circuit. Guess their writers don't find it the lowest.

Hello, Hearty eve indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
G:

Yep, it takes time, Philo, and the puns can include lots of languages, obscure slang, etc. But I started at 16, and I get a lot. Joyce also deliberately saved all his notebooks and drafts, which helps a lot. Still plenty I know I don't get. But neither do the other hardcore FW people I hang with, who've been reading it since the 50s in some cases...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm
G:

Just before his death in 1941, Joyce wrote that Flann's debut At Swim Two Birds was the best thing he'd read in years. If you have time, read everything F O'B wrote under several pseudoymns. :)
Avatar 7:27pm
Philo Gristle:

@BR Well, with nitrous no drill required, but trepanation is one time and permanent. Just use a cork, and unplug when you need a dose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
G:

absolutely yes, Honey. originally, a sheriff enforced law in a shire in England. a county was an area a count is in charge of, lol
Avatar 7:30pm

One of my first signs of independence from my mother was preferring mayonnaise over the nasty Miracle Whip she was always putting into our potato and tuna salads.
Avatar 7:36pm
Honey_U_Kettlewater:

Devin, you found a home?! Yay! You'll soon find out who your true friends are. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
Mike East:

@Philo - ha! I was just thinking that...unfortunately, I think the only option for greek would be a greek salad right now...which I had my fill of last week....still haven't decided....getting hungry...
Avatar 7:36pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm

@Honey - my mother had the same thing in reverse...she prefers miracle whip, and now that she's got no one else to feed, she is in her glory.
Avatar 7:37pm

@Mike: Stuffed grape leaves? I have a jar in the cabinet that I've been putting off fixing. Maybe I'll get around to that this weekend.

yeah, Honey, I got a bunch at the market last week and made some delicious greek salads for me and my wife...who discovered that she does NOT like calamata olives

hmmm...seafood pizza sounds good. To the menu book!
  7:40pm
Devin_Gristlemancer:

Wait... isn't Miracle Whip supposed to be Marshmallow?
Avatar 7:40pm

No mayo or miracle whip, than you very much! Butter or hummus, depending on whether I want to clot my veins or not.

  7:41pm

Hummus is a beautiful thing. Can do all kinds of things with it. I get bored by it every now and then, but I always come back around within a few days.
Avatar 7:42pm
Philo Gristle:

Oh, wait. I'm talking bread. Rye bread. Italian bread. Crispbread. Kalamata olive bread.
Avatar 7:42pm
Honey_U_Kettlewater:

Oh, mmmm, I loves the calamatas!
  7:43pm
Devin_Gristlemancer:

That really does sound nasty. Can't imagine what it'd taste like in a salad or sandwich. Mayo is what it is- and perhaps what it is, is kinda gross- but at least it's not super sugary sweet goop.
Avatar 7:43pm
Philo Gristle:

Oh, wait. I'm talking bread spread. Butter. Hummus. Greek hummus. Butter. Red pepper hummus.
Avatar 7:45pm
Honey_U_Kettlewater:

@Mike: My mother's taste prevailed over the family *except* where my brother was concerned. As the youngest and a girl, I never got what I preferred to be on the menu. I didn't get to experience vegetables until I was out on my own, simply because my brother didn't like them.
  7:45pm
Devin_Gristlemancer:

My opinions of Christie has been formed mostly by people on WFMU. I like him as a character... guess I'll see what I think of him as a politician.

Speaking of politics... has anyone watched "House of Cards"?
Avatar 7:46pm

Devin, you may very well think so but I couldn't POSSIBLY comment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm

@Devin - I watched the first 20 minutes...not sure what I think yet, but I'm wondering why the last three things I've seen Kevin Spacey in have involved him kneeling over a dead dog.

HAW. He's s so gross, but I have found myself unable to stop watching. I'm about half-way through the series now. I really don't know why I'm watching it. It doesn't really have any elements in it that I find particularly appealing, and yet...
