Listener comments!

  3:14pm
Looms:

Howdy!
Did Scott Walker sing on Yolanda? Sounded a bit like his voice on Tilt...
  3:15pm
Ike:

Hey Scott, got any sad country songs about lovers that vanish into thin air suddenly? I'm, uh, just asking for, um, a friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm
Scott:

Hey Looms! Sure sounded like it, but nope - twas one of our own, DJ Acapulco rodriguez
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm
Scott:

oof, sorry Ike! there's prolly some stuff here
  3:17pm
BSI:

By selecting this sound, Mr. Williams, you have brought much cheer to my brainmind.
  3:17pm
Pete the Flicker:

Colin Stetson is my favorite discovery of 2011!
  3:19pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Greetings. I am glad to join this show already in progress.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
Scott:

unbelievable that this guy is in Arcade Fire. it's all sax, I think bass sax.
  3:22pm
Looms:

Very nice voice then.
And yep! C Stetson is amazing and his 2011 album is killer.
  3:22pm
Pete the Flicker:

This may have been done the same as his last album. One take, no overdubs, just lots of mics around the room and a contact mike on his throat. Amazing mixing job. Amazing musician!
  3:22pm
Looms:

And so is this EP obviously...
  3:25pm
kat330:

If taking requests for instrumentals, Scott, I'd love to hear Meat Puppets' "Aurora Borealis" to go with this visual:

  3:28pm
Mike East:

that's insane, kat330
  3:30pm
kat330:

@Mike: No, THIS is insane: Saturn's FTL Stop Sign or Landing Strip?
http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap120122.html
  3:30pm
Ike:

I think Arcade Fire is great, but you have to like anthemic indie rock, obviously.
  3:33pm
BSI:

Being a veteran of early-1980s shopping mall pinball & video arcades, I'd prefer they not be on fire.
  3:36pm
Band Naming school:

@BSI: No tension or drama in the name ---> Tame/boring band name.
  3:36pm
Bridget:

hellooooo
  3:36pm
Led Zep, Iron B, GnR, etc etc:

Who knew.
  3:37pm
BSI:

......but Gorgar! Who would rescue poor Gorgar from the fire? For godsake, think of the Gorgar!
  3:38pm
BSI:

btw, brilliant mix SW.
  3:40pm
Mike East:

@kat330 - Weird. This is a crazy universe and I'll never understand most of it.
  3:47pm
kat330:

Yeah, I imagine even Einstein and Hawking feel the same way.

I tried Raymond Scott's "Soothing Sounds for Baby" on my first kid. Didn't really have an effect on her one way or the other..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
Scott:

yeah, my kid didn't go for it either! i wouldn't exactly call it "soothing". then again, she didn't go for Gavin Bryars either
  4:19pm
BSI:

@DCP: one of my prized possessions is a tape I found at a thrift-store ages ago: called "mother's heartbeat" -- it's just a solid tape of a woman's pulse recorded in utero. The idea (presumably) is to play it on auto-reverse for your newborn to keep it calm. Very weird. It's actually a great noise/drone release.
  4:25pm
Mark in DC:

Thanks so much for the Karen Dalton. Underheard I think, glad you put it on.
  4:26pm
dc pat:

Ah Scott, but my point was that the daughter didn't particularly like it BUT didn't protest either. I forgot to try it out on my son, ha!

The first sound my daughter made on this Earth was the galloping horse of her high-speed heart beating in utero. I have a recording of it somewhere. It's calming to me...

i play the galaga machine there

  4:28pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I'm happy I made recordings of my son when he was 5 and would tell wild and often very grim stories. I'm doing that now with my 3 year old but she isn't quite into that weird imagination stage yet.
  4:29pm
dc pat:

Ah, gotta make more videos...iPhone kind of ruined the documentation process.
  4:30pm

I hope the have Tempest....

  4:34pm

Or maybe Priest's Vicitims of CHanges?
  4:35pm

@ Cecile : sorry for the delay, confused by what?
  4:45pm
Cecile:

YES.
  4:46pm
Cecile:

were you asking what the reasons were for people not liking Tull? I got a little confused by the phrasing.
  4:48pm
pierre:

yes exactly, that's the perfect way to put it (sorry my english gets a bit rusty after a difficult day at work)
  4:48pm
kat330:

So, Scott, what happened to my early request for Meat Puppets? I didn't hold my hand up first or what?
  4:49pm
kata:

this ruuulllllzzzzz!!
  4:49pm
Jethro BoDean:

Most metal Sucks-
  4:50pm
Cecile:

I never liked the flute sound of Tull, and REALLY didn't once I heard Rahsaan Roland Kirk, didn't like Ian Anderson's voice that much, and once I heard real hardcore British folk, wasn't so excited about the fussy arrangements.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm
Scott:

sorry bout that kat330! w/ victim of changes its totally beyond my control, i -have- to play it
  4:51pm
kat330:

At least people can express opinions on this list without getting attacked. Geez, I said i despise Rod Stewart and got crap all around.
  4:51pm
Cecile:

and he can still hit that high note. DAMN.
  4:52pm
Cecile:

I love Rod, but he is terribly problematic. I understand why you hate him.
  4:52pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I would imagine this would be quite difficult to sing.
  4:52pm
kat330:

S'okay, Scott, I'll try another time, another DJ. :)
  4:53pm
pierre:

thanks for that answer Cecile, i think i like talking about music with people, whereas they enjoy something or don't, the reasons are always nice to read. (just saying that i'm not specially a fan neither, but i still have a lot to discover).
  4:53pm
G:

OK, so they didn't have sheet music or tabs :-)
  4:54pm
BSI:

holy crap.
  4:54pm
King penguin:

Is this Hoof
  4:54pm
kat330:

"G arrives -- funny, had a feeling he was on his way!" Kate Bush
  4:54pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

the first few Tull albums were good brit/blues rock, then they got a little arty and fussy, as you say, Cecile. I liked the earlier stuff.
  4:55pm
King penguin:

That should say is this Hoof
  4:56pm
pierre:

this is really really a great thing to hear.
  4:56pm
dale:

un-freakin-believable. i used to be able to sing that before my stones dropped. now it just hurts to try.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm
Scott:

yes, this is hoof
  4:57pm
kat330:

@Cecile: Yes, from my few weeks around these parts I've gathered we have pretty different tastes in music.
  4:57pm
King penguin:

I agree DCE. I went to see them and was horrified when they premiered thick. Same thing happened with me and PF and DSOTM. Yech.
  4:58pm

Awesome. Is that belock yodeling?
  4:58pm

Bravo to the Hoof!
  4:59pm
kata:

this set is superb, Scott W!
  4:59pm
Cecile:

but kat, we also seem to have a huge overlap.
  5:00pm
yiprockheresy:

Your show is great,i'm a 63 year old rocker who spent most of his life in the music biz. Love the surprise element of this station!!

Sorry about multiples. On train.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm
Scott:

oh, thanks kata! king penguin, that was chris stubbs yodeling. he's one of our staff knob-twiddlers
  5:01pm
G:

@kat: I'll cop to being a strange phenomenon. Phenomena are only natural.
  5:01pm
pierre:

The Lijadu Sisters, never heard them before.
  5:01pm
G:

Knob twiddler presumably means board op or engineer. Lest the dirty minded get the wrong idea.
  5:02pm
don:

working and lurkin.. but osupa wow.. and good luck with all that jeb bush shit scott..
  5:03pm
kat330:

G:, I've been waiting for you to show up when listening a few hours over the weekend just to use that line. J.T. pointed it out to me (he knows Kate better than I do).
@CC: At least we overlap on the jazz, yes, but heavy metal is mostly flat for me.
  5:03pm
yiprockheresy:

Hey Scott, have you ever heard of Sam Sacks on Arliss. The inimitable song stylings of??
  5:04pm
kat330:

J.T. & I listened to Martha's pledge premium over the weekend, too. NICE sounds from Africa indeed.
  5:05pm
Cecile:

I do love that Meat Puppets record you requested. One of my very favorites.
  5:05pm
Cecile:

YAIR YONA SUPERSTAR!
  5:06pm
kat330:

Apparently not so to Scott. But I'm still learning the ropes around here.
  5:09pm
G:

@kat: I'll cop to having to google Kate Bush plus some of those words to confirm my suspicion it was from a lyric.

Weekends are often chores and social stuff for me, and there is no commenting anyhow from 9AM-7PM Sunday.

I also don't use G (my initial) if another name or subject line works better for a comment. Content is king, authorship/ownership is ego.
  5:14pm
kat330:

Actually it was Saturday, G., and you had just posted on a playlist when J.T. pointed that lyric out to me. But then the DJ changed and you never showed up the next couple of hours (though maybe you were there lurking).
  5:16pm
hubba:

Hey Scott, or anyone, what is the name of the band that plays normal instruments like they are a techno group... they get some crazy sounds out of like a standard set-up... anyone?
  5:16pm
hubba:

that question looks dumb...
  5:16pm
moose:

i never realized that was the kate lyric, "G arrives"
and i've been listening to that song forever
  5:17pm
pierre:

@ Scott : sorry for another question, but, did you listen to the Unicorn Hard-On song?
  5:18pm
Cecile:

I know Hedningarna made their version of a techno record, but it still sounded like string instruments.
  5:20pm
G:

@kat: Chi sa? :-P Not even I at this point! That's right, it was snowing Sat., so I wasn't out as much as I would be on a Saturday, that's right.

OMG, it comes back to me that I had to write up a pointless annual self-eval at one of my online jobs, so no wonder I'd obliviated Saturday afternoon. And I am sure I am supposed to know J.T., but I am slow...
  5:21pm
hubba:

It sounds techno, like Jeff Mills or somehing, is that techno? But it was made with a three peice rock set-up... Scott plaed them soemtime ago... it amy be what you are talking about Cecile... i thought it was Electro soemthing or Electric... darn.
  5:23pm
Cecile:

Jeff Mills actually did orchestral arrangements of his stuff.

It could be - Hedningarna without their singers are just 3 people.
  5:23pm
kat330:

@G: No, no one is necessarily supposed to know anything, but J.T. is my better half (aka Jasperodus, and all the other akas we both adopt from time to time). It was the Rex show, I believe, that I had the line ready to paste, but you were a no-show.
  5:25pm
Mike East:

I used to cover Daft Punk songs in H.S. with a 4 pc. rock band. You're probably not talking about me, though.
  5:25pm
kat330:

[J.T.'s been home now 45 mins., but I can't interest him on the playlist, even mentioning a title that seems Finnish: "Dust Elf" for "Tomutonttu.")
  5:26pm
m:

feeling this
  5:27pm
G:

@at: I started working on my self-eval a few minutes after Rex started. :-) I listened and occasionally read comments, but to force myself to write and edit 2600 words of pointless verbiage and be done with it inside of about two hours, I needed *focus*. Désolé!
  5:27pm
hubba:

Is this the six organs and magic markers collab thing? Remind sme of windy and Carl with some Sonora Pine
  5:27pm
Brian en Angleterre:

Hello Scott & friends.
Cecile Just been to see OSS 117 Cairo Nest of Spies by Michel Hazanavicius. Very funny/silly take on early spy films. Went to this lovely renovated cinema, just like they used to be but with comfy seats.

hubba, yes that's exactly what that was
  5:28pm

Finally got some Focus on *this* show :-)
  5:28pm

Can't find anything on "200 Years", difficile.

@Brian en Angleterre: cool, have you seen "Rio ne répond plus"
  5:30pm
hubba:

Cecile, Elektro Guzzi... you may enjoy.
  5:31pm
Brian en Angleterre:

pierre that is the follow up I believe. Hoping to see The Artist this weekend. Great attention to detail. He does look like Sean Connery.

they also have another one on the grapefruit label, quite different
  5:31pm
Mike East:

Saw the Artist yesterday. I thought it was great.
  5:32pm
glenn:

nice theatre.
  5:33pm
Brian en Angleterre:

The director said that the dog should not get any awards as it would give him ideas above his station.
  5:33pm
pierre:

@ Brian en Angleterre : Yeah, and "Rio…" seems to have an even more cruel/funny side. And always a great satire of french. i don't know you'll tell me.
  5:33pm
kat330:

Ah, Richard -- my anti-Rod hero.
  5:34pm
Cecile:

sounds good, Brian!
  5:34pm
kat330:

Anyone ever consider some FMU DJ's are punking the listeners?
  5:35pm
Brian en Angleterre:

glenn the seats DO NOT spring up when you leave.
pierre it makes the French looks parochial.
  5:35pm
hubba:

besides the obvious, how so?
  5:35pm
Mike East:

@Brian - I disagree - that dog deserves an Oscar...or a lifetime supply of bones, or whatever dogs are digging these days.
  5:36pm
pierre:

(By the way some friends and i, played on this track. I'm sorry nothing very good)

kat330:

[Those with the 100% or 50/50 "hippie noise" I mean.]
  5:37pm
Ike:

If you have not listened to any DJ Kenny G. archives then you don't know what real punking of listeners is.
  5:37pm
don:

preach on Ike
  5:38pm
dale:

fairport vs. pentangle in a fist fight - who wins?
  5:38pm
Cecile:

I miss Kenny G terribly.
Even though I wanted to reach through the radio and throttle him half the time.
  5:38pm
Brian en Angleterre:

Mike I think the director had his tongue in his cheek. A Frenchman with an English sensibility, is that fair, pierre?
  5:38pm
kat330:

I think the other Ken punks us, too.
  5:39pm
Cecile:

If you count everyon who left Fairport, they would probably win by sheer force of numbers.
  5:39pm
Ike:

LOL@Cecile!!! Exactly!
  5:39pm
Cecile:

I know the other Ken punks us.

I miss Kenny and his Noel Coward records.
  5:39pm
Ike:

(Cecile@5:38 I mean)
  5:39pm
kat330:

I presume something practical, too, though, like BMI and other royalty costs.
  5:40pm
Brian en Angleterre:

dale I would not have picked a fight with Bert.
  5:40pm
Cecile:

I figured that, Ike.
  5:40pm
glenn:

might hubba be thinking of the dirtbombs?
  5:40pm
Mike East:

Yeah, I got that. The dog got more laughs than anyone else in the movie. I couldn't believe some of the things they got it to do.
  5:41pm
Cecile:

OH!
That might be it glenn.

The dog got the Dog d'Or award at Cannes. It's a real award.
  5:42pm
dale:

i don't think jacqui would have anyone's back. sandy denny probably threw quite a few bottles in her day
  5:42pm
glenn:

which fairport? sandy denny could have taken pentangle all by her lonesome, from everything i've heard about her.
  5:42pm
Brian en Angleterre:

Jacques Roussell with a golden collar.
  5:42pm
Cecile:

Glenn, hubba figured it was Elektro Guzzi.
  5:42pm
Ajax:

Whoa, that Hocus Pocus cover might be even better than the original (no easy feat!) FULL ON RAGIN'!
  5:42pm
hubba:

hey glenn, no i got it... it was elektro guzzi... i love the old Outhud/!!! sound and this band reminds me of that weird synthesis of live processing and jamming, yet i guess they don't do much of either.
  5:42pm
Ike:

Ken punks us but the "hippie noise" he plays is genuinely great (usually) in many listeners' opinions, in case you are doubting that, Kat. (Also BTW, *very* rare to get a request fulfilled on FMU.)
  5:43pm
glenn:

i don't know them. i like the dirtbombs though.
  5:43pm
Cecile:

I miss the old instrumental Outhud.
  5:44pm
glenn:

hey brian, my new favourite cooking show is the hairy bikers.
  5:44pm
Cecile:

Scott, I appreciate that you keep the fires of Motels fandom still burning. Even though I don't quite understand it.
  5:45pm
hubba:

Scott, can you hook me up with The Motels "Remember the nights"!? I really need to hear this song...
  5:45pm
hubba:

dude, you totally read my mind!
  5:45pm
Brian en Angleterre:

glenn it is a funny business all these cooks on TV. At least these boys are down to earth & love their mums!
  5:46pm
kat330:

@Ike: Yeah, that's why this is the first time I asked for one. However, certain folks with certain DJs get immediate results. I know now to fahgeddaboutit, but it was worth the try for the magnificent song I requested.
  5:46pm
glenn:

also, i'm gonna defend rod stewart up until whichever record has hot legs on it.
  5:47pm
hubba:

What if Scott got all Wolfman Jack...
  5:47pm
Cecile:

me too, glenn. Also that "Tonight's the Night" record was horrible.

Don't hate me because I'm beautiful.
  5:47pm
don:

AW SHIT YES!
  5:48pm
kat330:

It's like high school all over again, heh! :)
  5:49pm
kat330:

@Cecile: I hadn't realized Matt from Springfield was beautiful, but Irwin sure feeds his Amanda habit whenever he begs. :)
  5:49pm
Ike:

That's a very recent phenomenon, Kat. I have been listening since 1993-94 and it was NOT cool to make requests as I recall. NOW, I some commenters are almost reading the DJs' minds and want to hear something that the DJ has already selected. There is almost like a cosmic stream of music-fan consciousness that certain commenters (CECILE) tap into, picking out what would be a great segue at the same time as the DJs do.
  5:50pm
hubba:

Urinals?
  5:51pm
Cecile:

That's like me asking Ken to play Baby Animal, kat. He's gonna play it, I'm just pre-emptively speeding along the inevitable.
  5:51pm
Cecile:

yes, hubba.
  5:52pm
hubba:

Cecile, did you or do you still DJ?
  5:52pm
moose:

i go for that 'young turks'
  5:52pm
Brian en Angleterre:

The wonders of spotify.
  5:53pm
kat330:

@Ike: Yeah, it's all just "cosmic." ;)
  5:53pm
Cecile:

I DJd for four years at WCBN in Ann Arbor, 2 years at WBKX in Marquette, MI, and up until this past year, did a lot of freelance music writing.
  5:54pm
kat330:

Time to prepare our evening repast -- so long all. Take and give care!
  5:54pm
Cecile:

see ya later.
  5:56pm
hubba:

freelance music writing sounds like a good gig... much more satisfying, maybe, than slogging away for the state.
  5:57pm
Dave B:

See ya at the Barcade!
  5:58pm
Cecile:

I kinda got burned out on it.
And my job got more interesting.
I've actually gone back to working on art in earnest. It's probably my favorite pasttime - but music and writing/reading are in a photo finish.
  6:01pm
Cecile:

great show, Scott.
  6:01pm
Brian en Angleterre:

I'l be there in spirit. Au revoir.
