I've known more than one biologist who was a music nerd, but this album title makes me wonder if we don't have at least one musician in Palomar who's a molecular biology nerd...and they're great!
  9:48pm
Destroit:

Good show, I like what I'm hearing, but am I totally clueless? very limited knowledge on most of the artists tonight.
  9:49pm
Julie:

@Des i feel the same way when I listen!
  9:51pm
G:

sorry, was loading the dishwasher... yes, holly! john, i'm moving fast enough, but multitasking so i'm on- and off-page...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
efd:

@Destroit & Julie, honestly I feel the same way when I listen to most other WFMU shows!
  9:52pm
Stevel:

Destroit/Julie: Me too, and I was a pretty heavy listener, especially in the early 80s. But it often fills in gaps. I love it most when I hear a song that I haven't heard in, well, a long long time.
  9:52pm
Destroit:

It's a good feeling Julie. Downright spectacular show the other night. So many memories.
  9:52pm
Julie:

@EFD yep pretty much. We of the offbeat music collections
  9:52pm
Andrea-in-DC:

I want to roller skate to this...
  9:53pm
Julie:

@Des thank you!

yes roller skating music!
  9:53pm
Stevel:

efd: That's an advantage of WFMU's "None of the hits all of the time" approach. It opens up the vaults like no other source I know.
  9:54pm
Destroit:

Awesome. Confirmed I'm not clueless; and lol Andrea.

Hi Randy! Ready for a chilly evening? I just retrieved extra fleece, fingerless gloves & my lucky Duke hat. Opened all the cabinets. All systems go!

@efd - SO good!
  9:58pm
PB:

To follow up on Randy's point, I remember once reading somewhere (can't recall where) that there are roughly 20,000 new releases per year in the US alone.
  9:58pm
joey p:

didnt know the smithereens still existed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm
efd:

@joey, they never stopped existing! 30 years and counting!

Randy and PB, you both make excellent points. No one's gonna know it all, not even at WFMU. Except Brian.
  10:00pm
G:

smithereens _2011_ has been getting a decent amount of airplay on FMU since it came out last spring
  10:01pm
Randy in NC:

Hi efd, all, I used to go to the Wal-Lex, when I was a kid I lived right near there. As I remember, there was the rink, a candle pin bowling alley and a miniature golf place, right? Birthday party city...
  10:02pm
James in ATL:

Yes, 45's are from ATL
  10:03pm
Destroit:

Same here Joey, just another nugget. NC, both holly & Randy, hello. Going to buzzing around Raleigh every once in a while for job reasons, looking forward to exploring a new state.

for those not in the know:
"The Wal-Lex Recreation Center, or simply Wal-Lex, was an entertainment complex located in Waltham, Massachusetts which operated from 1947 until 2002. Considered a landmark in Waltham and the surrounding area, Wal-Lex consisted of a 60-lane candlepin bowling facility, a rollerskating rink, billiard tables, and video games. It also featured mini-golf until 1985."

My housemate thinks Bebe Neuwirth is the sexiest woman ever. I don't know if he's familiar with Bebe Buell.
  10:10pm
Randy in NC:

@G: Thanks, I used to ride my bike there. And of course the closest Stop and Shop was next door. It's too bad there is no picture of the rink. It had this really cool 50's flying saucer look as I recall.
  10:10pm
Stevel:

How many steps?

Hi Funk Fans :)

Hi Evan, I'm enjoying One for Wednesday :)
  10:14pm

Well, put it this way, I kinda agree with your housemate (not 'ever' but a certain appeal). Once I heard Bebe on the radio, the magic was gone. Radiation is good.

  10:26pm
Holly in NC:

Let me clarify. I LOVED Crocodiles in high school - which was a very avant liking in suburban Connecticut. Then in college and colllege radio, I got into that 'if more than 3 people know about a band it sucks' thing... don't tell me some of y'all haven't been there!

I'm working on it;-)
  10:27pm
Julie:

you grew up in the CT suburbs? Fairfield county?
  10:29pm

@G: Thanks, that's exactly as I remember it.

N'Haven county.

There is a relatively new band (formed in 08) called the Crocodiles, one of the members of whom is, I believe, married to Dee Dee of the Dum Dum Girls.

Bebe Buell is all-encompassing.
Liv was raised believing Todd R was her dad -I wonder how often she heard "gee, you look just like that dude from Aerosmith, except you're pretty"
  11:05pm
Julie:

@Bark she did EVERY rock guy in the 60s and 70s. Wrote a book called I'm with the Band, Pamela Des barres. She was in zappa's GTO's

Des Barres! She's With The Band! (book is guilty pleasure)

OK, now THAT was an inspired cover version. I'll be so disappointed if I find out it's just a bunch o'guys who never learned that irony was so 20th century.

Evan, well, awwright! And the Charles Bradley album came out a year ago, and is awesome.
  11:13pm

Now that it's over, I can take a moment to comment on the sheer awesomeness of that Section 25 12in.
Mr.Chop here is great too, so less typing more grooving!

@Holly, they're worth investigating further! Glad you dug the Section 25!
  11:42pm

Oh, there's a lot to be intrigued about with Stories, starting with the fact that the original driving force was Michael Brown of The Left Banke, but he was gone by the time they covered (and had the big US hit with) Hot Chocolate's Brother Louie.
  11:47pm
G:

ex-Oasis, sounding like Tears for Fears, kinda sorta

Evan, useless fact, I used to work with No Dice's singer Roger Ferris' dad Eddie in the Seventies. They were London based. Lose no sleep chasing their back catalogue!!! Forgotten all 'bout them until now.

My Name in MICHAEL CAINE!!!Coincidentially, I've just remembered that there was another guy in the bookshop called Tony Conway who had a band called Security Risk followed by Mood Six. He wrote the B side of 'Mickey' by Toni Basil called 'Hangin' Around'. They were more psych revival. I remember hearing his demo of Hangin' Around then Toni Basil's version. What could be done with proper arranging!!

Ohh, I love Mood Six and especially "Hanging Around" and "Just Like A Dream!" I can't believe in all this time I never knew Toni Basil covered it!

There is a British group called Animal Kingdom had an album out last year. I thought they sounded like Mood Six at times. Not sure if anyone else did though. You know when you catch little nuances and it triggers memories, as The Temptations sang Just my imagination running away with me.
