in the early 70s there was record by a band called, i think, the Masked Marauders, and the liner notes implied that it was a collaboration of the beatles and dylan but their names couldnt be printed for legal reasons. what genre of pseudo- beatles is that?

Big Star in the Memphis pantheon, Alex being a link in the chain, and whatnot.

Yes, I agree, but suggest the early mass exposure to Big Star came via Creem magazine. And the earlier mass exposure to "The Letter" is of course primary.

Careful about thinking they were Memphis's second generation though. They're probably the fourth, if you count The 5 Royales/Willie Mitchell period as one, Stax as two, and late Stax (second Bar Kays, for instance) as three.

Now we're at the juncture between highly produced pop and New Wave.
